Assessing effects of a media campaign on HIV/Aids awareness and prevention in Nigeria
The VISION Project reached a large portion of the population and exposure to mass media programs about reproductive health and HIV prevention topics can help increase HIV/AIDS awareness. Programs that target rural populations, females, and unmarried individuals, and disseminate information on where to obtain condoms, are needed to reduce barriers to condom use. Improvements in HIV/AIDS prevention behaviour are likely to require that these program…
Social and Proximate Determinants of Sexual Activity in Rural Nigeria
This study analyses the social, physiological and motivational determinants of sexual activity for 644 married women in rural areas of Osun State, Nigeria. The data come from the Fertility Awareness and Pregnancy Avoidance study conducted in 1993–94. Sexual activity is measured by three continuous variables: weekly frequency of (1) total sexual activity, (2) coital-only sex and (3) both coital/non-coital sex. Analyses of variance were performed t…
Knowledge of Possible Pregnancy at First Coitus
This paper discusses the reproductive health knowledge of Nigerian in-school adolescents, with special reference to pregnancy occurrence at first coitus. The data were derived from an Association for Reproductive and Family Health (ARFH) survey carried out in four secondary schools in Ibadan, Nigeria, between August and October 1995. A total of 828 students were interviewed. The results revealed that the majority of sexually active adolescents we…
Who's at Risk? Men's STD Experience and Condom Use in Southwest Nigeria
Many STD/HIV‐prevention programs worldwide assume that individuals' risk of acquiring sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV infection, is highest in the context of commercial sex. To address this assumption, research conducted in urban Southwest Nigeria combined qualitative and quantitative methods to examine men's sexual behavior, condom use, and STD experience in different types of sexual relationships (marital, casual, and commercial). …
Analysis of contraceptive discontinuation in six developing countries from durations of use at survey
We conduct a cross-national study of contraceptive discontinuation among currently married nonsterilized contracepting women in Bolivia, Egypt, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Zimbabwe using the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS). Since the DHS contains no true completed epochs of contraceptive use, the distribution of use times at survey is used to approximate the distribution of the completed epochs using the renewal theorem. Two techniques b…
Indicators for Measuring the Quality of Family Planning Services in Nigeria
This article presents the Situation Analysis approach as a means of collecting data that can be used to assess the quality of care provided by family planning service-delivery points (SDPs), and describes the quality of services offered in Nigeria. Elements of the quality of services provided at 181 clinical service-delivery points in six states of Nigeria are described. The substantive results from the study suggest that although most of the 181…
Marital fertility in polygynous unions in Nigeria
Using data from the Nigerian Fertility Survey of 1981–82, the effect of polygyny on fertility is examined, by age cohort, for four regions of the country. Comparison of mean completed and current fertility suggests that changes in reproductive behaviour are taking place in Nigeria, restricting the fertility of women in polygynous unions, especially of younger women, when socioeconomic factors are taken into account.
