  • Upholding humanity: The role of redress in preventing and responding to civilian harm

Open Access•Luke Moffett, Steven van de Put et al.•ARTICLE•International Review of the Red…•2025

International humanitarian law (IHL) has been under immense pressure in the past few years. Despite IHL being created to mitigate suffering in armed conflicts, in recent years it has been leveraged by some as a means of justifying violence against civilians under the guise of proportionate incidental loss. With IHL lacking organic international accountability mechanisms, some States have “gamed” the rules of this body of law, resulting in militar…

  • The association between tax structure and cigarette price variability: Findings from the ITC Project

Ce Shang, Frank J Chaloupka et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2015

Our study provides empirical evidence of a relationship between tax structure and cigarette price variability. We find that, compared to the specific uniform tax structure, mixed uniform and tiered (specific, ad valorem or mixed) structures are associated with greater price variability (p≤0.01). Moreover, while a greater share of the specific component in total excise taxes is associated with lower price variability (p≤0.05), a tiered tax structu…

  • Weight control belief and its impact on the effectiveness of tobacco control policies on quit attempts: Findings from the ITC 4 Country Survey

Ce Shang, Frank J Chaloupka et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2015

Although our results vary by gender and country, the findings suggest that weight concerns do alter policy responsiveness in quit attempts in certain populations. Policy makers should take this into account and alleviate weight concerns to enhance the effectiveness of existing tobacco control policies on promoting quitting smoking

  • Gender and Climate Change Adaptation in Agrarian Settings: Current Thinking, New Directions, and Research Frontiers

    Open Access•Edward R Carr, M Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•Geography Compass•2014•Cited by: 28•References: 85

The impacts of climate variability and change impinge upon different lives and livelihoods within agrarian populations in complex ways. While academic, donor, and implementer efforts to understand and act on this complexity have been profoundly influenced by gender analysis, most contemporary analyses are predicated on a construction of gender as binary (men versus women). This approach runs contrary to current understandings of gender and identi…

The history of infectious disease in humans (and to a lesser extent other primates) has been studied from different perspectives including those of bioarchaeology, medical history, and evolutionary genetics. Technical advances in nucleotide sequencing as well as in the ability to obtain genetic material from difficult sources (such as feces and ancient materials) have enhanced our ability to examine both ancient pathogens and pathogens that are d…

    S F Paul Man, S Man et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2012

Background Since the thalidomide tragedy in the 1960s, many women are concerned with the use of drugs in pregnancy. Antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) are commonly used to treat epilepsy and bipolar disorders in women of child bearing age. However, some AEDs are associated with an increased risk of major congenital malformations. Untreated epilepsy and bipolar disorders in pregnancy may lead to devastating consequences for both mother and child. This lea…

  • The Use History of Small Roomblocks in Pueblo III Period Settlement Clusters of the El Morro Valley, New Mexico

    M Thompson, Maurice Scott Thompson•ARTICLE•KIVA•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 13

This paper examines the use history of roomblocks within a Post-Chacoan era community in the El Morro Valley, New Mexico. It estimates the resident population and calculates the occupation span of two small roomblocks in the Los Gigantes site cluster (LA 56159), a group of more than a dozen residential pueblos dating to the late Pueblo III period (circa AD 1225 - 1275). The roomblocks and surrounding use areas were excavated using an intensive st…

  • Applying DPSIR to sustainable development

Edward R Carr, Philip M Wingard et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2007

The DPSIR framework was devised in the late 1990s as a tool for the reporting and analysis of environmental problems, ranging in scale from global systems to localized watersheds. Since then, international organizations have begun to apply this framework to the evaluation of sustainable development initiatives, to better understand and overcome barriers to sustainability. While this may seem a logical application for an integrated environmental a…

Although this collection of articles is not formally a commentary on Elizabeth Anscombe's famous article of the same title, in which she criticised the moral philosophy prevalent in 1958, a number of the contributors do take Anscombe's work as a starting point. Taken together the collection could be seen as a demonstration of the extent to which moral philosophers have since attempted to answer Anscombe's challenge, and to develop an approach to …
