Sleep disorder symptoms and massed delivery of prolonged exposure for posttraumatic stress disorder: Nodding off but not missing out
These findings are consistent with the expectation that the daily structure of massed PE may enhance treatment engagement in patients who are typically drowsy or not well-rested, thus facilitating fear extinction. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
Recommended Amount of Sleep for a Healthy Adult: A Joint Consensus Statement of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and Sleep Research Society
Geographic variations in sleep duration: A multilevel analysis from the Boston Area Community Health (Bach) Survey
BACKGROUND: Sleep plays an important role in health and varies by social determinants. Little is known, however, about geographic variations in sleep and the role of individual-level and neighbourhood-level factors. METHODS: We used a multilevel modelling approach to quantify neighbourhood variation in self-reported sleep duration (very short <5 h; short 5-6.9 h; normative 7-8.9 h; long ≥9 h) among 3591 participants of the Boston Area Community H…
Association of Denture Use with Sleep‐disordered Breathing Among Older Adults
This preliminary study found an association between sleep-disordered breathing and denture use, which may represent a proxy for a relationship between sleep-disordered breathing and edentulism. Given the common occurrence of both conditions among older adults, the observed relationship warrants a more detailed investigation of the mechanisms whereby loss of teeth leads to upper airway closure during sleep
Linking Race and Well-being within a Biopsychosocial Framework: Variation in Subjective Sleep Quality in Two Racially Diverse Older Adult Samples
Differential life experiences associated with race may critically affect the balance between physical and psychological well-being. This study investigated an age-related and disease-related symptom, restless sleep, among older African American and white members of two sociodemographically matched cohorts, community-dwelling older adults and older adults with chronic renal failure undergoing maintenance dialysis therapy. Sleep behaviors reflect a…
Race and Restless Sleep Complaint in Older Chronic Dialysis Patients and Nondialysis Community Controls
There is mixed evidence about the relation of race to risk of sleep disturbance. We explored the relation of race to restless sleep complaint in survey data from a cohort of 311 older patients undergoing chronic renal dialysis and a similarly aged cohort of 354 nondialysis controls. Older dialysis patients were significantly more likely to report restless sleep. Restless sleep complaint was related to comorbidity, depressed mood, use of sleep med…
Prevalence of self-reported poor sleep in a healthy population aged 50-65
Treating Insomnia: Pharmacological and Nonpharmacological Approaches
Insomnia is a commonly encountered condition in clinical practice. The prevalence of self-reported poor sleep increases with age and is more common in women. There are clear associations between poor sleep and psychiatric disturbance; however, causality in this regard may be complex, and there are at least some insomniacs who show high somatic tension without marked psychopathology. The development of chronic insomnia can be conceptualized as inv…
Sleep apnea and mortality in an aged cohort
In the aged, sleep may be a vulnerable period for death from cardiovascular causes. Because of its high prevalence in the elderly, sleep apnea has been suggested to be one mechanism contributing to such sleep-related mortality. In this study, a cohort of 198 non-institutionalized elderly individuals (mean age at entry = 66) were followed for periods up to 12 years after initial polysomnography. The mortality ratio for sleep apnea (defined as a Re…
