Pentecostalism in the ‘New Luanda’: Urbanity, Imaginaries, Aspirations and Resistance
In the ‘New Angola’ top-down governing and post-war reconstruction project, ‘New Luanda’ has emerged as a powerful social imaginary. It represents an aspiration, projecting desired ways of life, shaping developmental narratives, and forming the matrix for the moral and sociopolitical horizon of the desired future city, and more broadly, for Angolan citizens. Such materialities, or religious icons, are directly involved with transformations and the emergence of a new type of Polish civil society and activism. Therefore, we elaborate on the notion of religious icons involved in the recent re-emergence of the protest culture in Poland. We reframe them in …

While other disciplines are incorporating the socio-political and socially transformative potential of academic knowledge production into their curricula, the field of the study of religion(s) is lagging behi…
Religion and Biopolitics in the Time of Corona: The Catholic Feast of Corpus Christi in a Polish City
We explored the Corona pandemic through the nexus of the biopolitics of the Catholic Church and the state in Poland. We reflected on how religion in the pandemic crisis manages social lives, citizenship, and social control, superseding state biopolitics. The observation of the 2020’s Corpus Christi festival in Kraków and the analysis of sermons delivered by Polish Catholic leaders are at the core of our argument. They were followed by LGBTQ+ and …
The Pentecostal Antirevolution: Reflections from Angola
This article discusses the so-called 'revolutionary' character of Evangelical and Pentecostal movements, as has been proposed in mainstream sociological and anthropological literature. Through a historical and ethnographic account of Evangelical and Pentecostal Christianity in Angola, we suggest that in this country Evangelicalism and Pentecostalism is defined by exclusionary tactics that render most churches compliant with the current political …
