  • Cooperativas No Agropecuarias: The Emergence of a New Form of Social Property in Cuba

Open Access•Steve Ludlam, Steve Ludlam Steve Ludlam•ARTICLE•International Journal of Cuban…•2014

Cuba's ongoing economic reform programme includes a significant development of non-agricultural cooperatives that has received little comment in spite of the priority accorded to this officially preferred form of non-state activity. The article notes the ambiguous treatment of cooperatives in historical socialist debates in general and Cuban debates in particular. Non-agricultural cooperativism, although seen as bringing efficiency and income gai…

  • A history of the Northern Ireland Labour Party: Democratic Socialism and Sectarianism

Aaron Edwards, John Callaghan et al.•BOOK•History of the Northern Ireland…•2013

This is a definitive history of the Northern Ireland Labour Party (NILP), a unique political force that drew its support from Protestants and Catholics and became electorally viable despite deep-seated ethnic, religious and national divisions. Formed in 1924 and disbanded in 1987, it succeeded in returning several of its members to the locally based Northern Ireland parliament in 1925–29 and 1958–72, and polled some 100,000 votes in the 1964 and …

  • Aspects of Cuba's Strategy to Revive Socialist Development

    Steve Ludlam•ARTICLE•Science & Society•2012•Cited by: 2•References: 3

The Cuban Revolution has survived the Soviet collapse, preserved its sovereignty, and recovered its pre-crisis national income. To continue its socialist transition, it has had to confront the inefficiencies of its blockaded economy and the social damage of its crisis management. Recuperation of normality in working life requires restoration of the “socialist principle of distribution,” linking personal consumption to work performed, that has pro…

  • Right-Wing Politics in the New Latin America: Reaction and Revolt

Francisco Dominguez, Geraldine Lievesley et al.•BOOK•Right-Wing Politics in the New…•2011

The focus for students of Latin America in the past decade has been on the political forces of the left and the so-called ‘pink tide’ presidencies attempting to bring about social and economic change in the region. However, there has been far less attention paid to the rightwing political forces resisting such change. Such opposition is being orchestrated by political parties, business, the private media and other social and cultural institutions…

  • Reclaiming Latin America: Experiments in radical social democracy

Geraldine Lievesley, Steve Ludlam•BOOK•Reclaiming Latin America•2009

Reclaiming Latin America is a one-stop guide to the revival of social democratic and socialist politics across the region. \n \nAt the end of the Cold War, and through decades of neoliberal domination and the 'Washington Consensus' it seemed that the left could do nothing but beat a ragged retreat in Latin America. Yet this book looks at the new opportunities that sprang up through electoral politics and mass action during that period. \n \nThe c…

  • Cuban Labour at 50: What About the Workers

    Open Access•Steve Ludlam•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Latin American Research•2009•Cited by: 5•References: 5

Cuba is reforming its employment relations as it emerges from the economic crisis and restructuring of the 1990s. Employment relations are one key indicator of the state of Cuba's socialist ambition as it celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Revolution. Several key aspects of recent employment law and salary reform are discussed. It is argued that, within a state-dominated economy, Cuba's workers and trade unions continue to exercise real influ…

  • The Political Representation of the Labour Interest in Britain

Open Access•Steve Ludlam, Andrew J Taylor et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Industrial…•2003

This article analyses the condition of the labour alliance of the Labour Party and its affiliated unions in the light of a recent typology of union–party links, and of Lewis Minkin's seminal study of the British union–party link. We conclude that, while the link appeared to have stabilized before the general election in 2001, it has become much more volatile since, although the new group of more left‐wing leaders of major unions remains determine…

  • The Development of an Anglo-American Model of Trade Union and Political Party Relations

    Open Access•Matthew M Bodah, Steve Ludlam et al.•ARTICLE•Labor Studies Journal•2003•References: 9

In this article we offer an historical and comparative view of trade union and political party relations in the United States and Great Britain. Using our own typology of union/party linkages, we trace the development of ties between the labor movements and politi cal parties in both countries from the beginning of the 20 th cen tury, when both labor movements turned to political action to gain relief from hostile court decisions; through the mid…

Open Access•Steve Ludlam, Matthew M Bodah et al.•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Politics…•2002•Cited by: 2•References: 4

This article analyses the linkage between trade unions and the US Democratic Party and the UK Labour Party in the twentieth century. A typology suited to longitudinal analysis of labour movement union-party linkages is proposed to help characterise and explain historical development of these two national movements through earlier types of linkage, into ‘New Labour’ and ‘New Democratic’ forms. The paper suggests that, from similar starting points,…

Steve Ludlam, A Taylor et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Legislative Studies•2002

This research note reconsiders evidence on 'in-kind' donations presented to the hearings on party funding conducted by the Committee on Standards in Public Life. The donation reports of the Electoral Commission, established by the Elections, Parties and Referendums Act (2000), suggest that the scale of trade unions' in-kind donations to Labour general election campaigns was greatly overstated in the hearings

The convergence of a widening social base in the Parliamentary Conservative Party with an increasingly middle class Parliamentary Labour Party has been a persistent observation of postwar élite studies. Claims are frequently made that the Thatcher and Major years have produced a more 'classless' Conservative élite. On the basis of new research, it is demonstrated that members of the socio-educational élite continue to enjoy vastly disproportionat…

The IMF settlement of December 1976 looms large in popular and partisan views of the politics of the 1970s. It is argued here that conventional academic wisdom has come to embody several misleading myths about its impact on economic policy. Evidence is presented to challenge four such myths which suggest that the IMF forced the Labour government to launch an attack on public spending, introduce cash limits to control public spending, introduce mo…
