  • Neighborhood Concentration of Child Poverty by Immigrant Background

Open Access•Miriam Evensen, Sara Cool et al.•ARTICLE•Child Indicators Research•2026

Child poverty has been steadily rising across high-income countries, including Scandinavia, raising concerns about its spatial concentration and potential impact on inequality. This study uses administrative data to investigate the development of geographic concentration of child poverty in Norway from 2004 to 2022, with a focus on variations across immigrant and native-born children. We analyze neighborhood poverty trends and measure overexposur…

  • Older sisters and younger siblings

    Open Access•Sara Cool•ARTICLE•Economics of Education Review•2025

I investigate how having an older sister rather than brother matters for the school performance of younger siblings, using administrative register data for Norwegian school children. Having an older sister improves second borns’ grade point average at the end of compulsory education by 2.6 percent of a standard deviation. The older sister advantage is roughly equal in size for second born boys and girls, and across subjects. Further analyses indi…

  • Ufrivillig og frivillig barnløse

    Open Access•Sara Cool, Sara Cools•ARTICLE•Tidsskrift for samfunnsforskning•2025•Referencias: 2

  • Explaining Residential Clustering of Large Families

Open Access•Janna Bergsvik, Sara Cool et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Population /…•2023•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 63

Numerous studies have shown that fertility behavior is spatially clustered. In addition to pure contextual effects, two causal mechanisms could drive this pattern. First, neighbors may influence each other's fertility and second, family size may influence decisions about where to live. In this study we examine these two potential causal mechanisms empirically, using the sex composition of the two eldest children and twin births as instrumental va…

  • Local Immigration and Support for Anti‐Immigration Parties

Open Access•Sara Cool, Sara Cools et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Political…•2021•Citada por: 22•Referencias: 50

Does the share of immigrants in a community influence whether people vote for anti‐immigration parties? We conduct a systematic review of the causal inference literature studying this question. We collect estimates from 20 studies and develop a new Bayesian meta‐analysis framework to account for both between‐study heterogeneity in effect sizes and the possibility of reporting bias. Although meta‐analysis methods that do not adjust for reporting b…

  • Rainfall shocks and intimate partner violence in sub-Saharan Africa

Open Access•Sara Cool, Sara Cools et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Peace Research•2020•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 37

Global climate change makes extreme precipitation events likely to become more frequent and intense in large parts of Africa. We study the effect of rainfall shocks on intimate partner violence in sub-Saharan Africa. The analysis shows the presence of spatial autocorrelation in rainfall shocks, which compromises the exogeneity of rainfall shocks in many applications. We correct for the autocorrelation using spatial polynomials. In particular, we …

  • Geografisk variasjon i sosial mobilitet

  • Identifying interaction effects using random fertility shocks

    Open Access•Rannveig Kaldager Hart, Rannveig Hart et al.•ARTICLE•Demographic Research•2019•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 29

Fertility interaction effects in social networks increasingly attracts the interest of demographers. While these theories propose a causal mechanism, they are rarely put to test in a plausibly causal statistical design

  • Resources and Intimate Partner Violence in Sub-Saharan Africa

    Open Access•Sara Cool, A Kotsadam•ARTICLE•World Development•2017•Citada por: 61•Referencias: 10

Combining DHS data for 580,000 women from 30 different countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, we analyze how both the incidence and the acceptance of intimate partner violence vary across time and space, in a region with record high levels of violence against women. We review the existing literature regarding the impact of resources on intimate partner violence, extracting testable and often conflicting hypotheses at the micro and macro level, and on t…

  • The Effect of Childhood Family Size on Fertility in Adulthood

Open Access•Sara Cool, Sara Cools et al.•ARTICLE•Demography•2017•Citada por: 11•Referencias: 48

Although fertility is positively correlated across generations, the causal effect of children’s experience with larger sibships on their own fertility in adulthood is poorly understood. With the sex composition of the two firstborn children as an instrumental variable, we estimate the effect of sibship size on adult fertility using high-quality data from Norwegian administrative registers. Our study sample is all firstborns or second-borns during…

  • Children and Careers

Open Access•Sara Cool, Sara Cools et al.•ARTICLE•Demography•2017•Citada por: 17•Referencias: 36

We estimate the effect of family size on various measures of labor market outcomes over the whole career until retirement, using instrumental variables estimation in data from Norwegian administrative registers. Parents’ number of children is instrumented with the sex mix of their first two children. We find that having additional children causes sizable reductions in labor supply for women, which fade as children mature and even turn positive fo…

  • Causal Effects of Paternity Leave on Children and Parents

Open Access•Sara Cool, Sara Cools et al.•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Journal of Economics•2015

Reserving a share of the parental leave period for fathers is considered necessary in order to induce fathers to take leave, and to increase men's participation in child‐rearing. We investigate how a parental leave reform directed towards fathers affected leave‐taking, and, in turn, children's and parents' long‐term outcomes. A paternal leave quota greatly increases the share of men taking paternity leave. We find evidence that children's school …
