    In the course of a study of precolonial societal relationships in Tropical Africa, we have come to the conclusion that these relationships cannot be classified either as those of slaveholding (in the sense in which this term is employed to define social relationships in ancient Greece and Rome) or as feudal (in the sense in which this term is applied to medieval Europe); see our Western and Central Africa, 1958
