  • Time's Up? How Temporal Maps of Climate Change Shape Climate Action

    Open Access•I Sendroiu, Amalia Álvarez-Benjumea et al.•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•2025•Cited by: 3•References: 125

We track how temporal mappings of climate change relate to individuals' actions to address the climate crisis. We consider multiple aspects of temporal maps and so make two innovations over the literature to date. First, we examine how individuals coordinate their actions across both their own expectations of the future (first-order futures) and their sense of others' expectations (second-order futures). Second, we examine past effects of climate…

  • The Enforcement of Political Norms

    Open Access•Amalia Álvarez-Benjumea, Vicente Valentim•ARTICLE•British Journal of Political…•2024•Cited by: 4•References: 78

Democracies generate norms prescribing what behaviours and preferences are deemed acceptable. But what keeps these political norms in place? We expect that they are enforced by observers who disapprove of norm-breaching behaviour and are willing to apply sanctions that make it socially costly. We test this expectation with a survey in Spain, where respondents were shown pictures of individuals with different political views. We focus on norms aga…

  • Uncovering hidden opinions

    Open Access•Amalia Álvarez-Benjumea•ARTICLE•European Sociological Review•2023•Cited by: 6•References: 63

Social norms against prejudice are widespread and generally supported by society, yet examples of bigotry are often found. I propose that anti-prejudice norms can quickly erode when individuals are exposed to hate content, therefore, facilitating the expression of prejudice. To test this, participants were invited to participate in an experimental online forum discussing immigration. I compare the comments of participants exposed to xenophobic co…

  • Normative Change and Culture of Hate

    Open Access•Amalia Álvarez-Benjumea, F Winter•ARTICLE•European Sociological Review•2018•Cited by: 7•References: 36

We present an online experiment in which we investigate the impact of perceived social acceptability on online hate speech, and measure the causal effect of specific interventions. We compare two types of interventions: counter-speaking (informal verbal sanctions) and censoring (deleting hateful content). The interventions are based on the belief that individuals infer acceptability from the context, using previous actions as a source of normativ…
