In Memoriam
Anniversaries
The hundredth anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War is only the first of a large number of major European historical anniversaries that will occur in the coming four years. Other twentieth-century anniversaries include that of the Russian Revolution and the Easter Uprising; notable corollaries from earlier centuries include the Battle of Bannockburn, the Hanoverian succession, the Battle of Waterloo and, perhaps most significant of a…

Die Deutsche Reformation Zwischen Spätmittelalter und Früher Neuzeit
German Histories in the Age of Reformations, 1400–1650
This book studies the connections between the political reform of the Holy Roman Empire and the German lands around 1500 and the sixteenth-century religious reformations, both Protestant and Catholic. It argues that the character of the political changes (dispersed sovereignty, local autonomy) prevented both a general reformation of the Church before 1520 and a national reformation thereafter. The resulting settlement maintained the public peace …

Fortress Under Siege
Measured against its subject, German history from the ancient forests to the “Berlin Republic,” A Mighty Fortress: A New History of the German People by Steven Ozment is a very short book. Karl Lamprecht (1856–1915) required some 6,000 pages in twelve volumes to cover the subject, and he had no twentieth century to master. Ozment's book is readable. It moves along in the athletic style and at the brisk pace we expect from him and is largely free …

included that are less than useful; pictures of watermelons in Damascus and modern multi-faith visitors to the Tomb of the Virgin could readily have been replaced by more useful illustrations of things mentioned in the text but not shown (like Titian's "Presentation of the Virgin").One cannot doubt the role Islamic examples played in shaping the Venetian cityscape. That this book adds little to one's understanding of how they did so may merely ref…

New Studies on the Protestant Reformation
Communities, Politics, and Reformation in Early Modern Europe
The studies united in this volume explore themes of community, politics, religion, gender, and social conflict and accommodation during the first decades of the Reformation movement. Other chapters investigate historiographical themes, especially the interpretation of early modern German history. Two longer chapters address European themes: the historical sociology of early modern societies in terms of legal definitions of status and modern conce…

The Social Place of a German Renaissance Artist
In Jakob Burckhardt's classic vision of the emergence of a new, individualistic consciousness in Renaissance Italy, the artist took his place behind the tyrant as one of the early escapees from the crumbling prisons of medieval corporate institutions. Although the picture of his progress from craftsman to free professional is more nuanced and qualified in the recent literature, the Italian artist continues to enjoy his reputation as one of the fe…

Jacob Sturm of Strasbourg and the Lutherans at the Diet of Augsburg, 1530
All through the second half of the year 1529, John the Constant, the Elector of Saxony, played a double game with the Evangelical towns of southwestern Germany. In April of that year at the Diet of Speier, John had led a united Evangelical party in a protest against the recess of the Diet and in an agreement to form a military alliance of all the Evangelical governments in the empire. A few weeks later, John began to regret that he had allied wit…

The Struggle for Stability in Early Modern Europe
Theodore K Rabb's contemplative book offers a new interpretation of the seventeenth century Europe, focusing on a crucial transition from turmoil to relative tranquility. The book shows, in splendid illustrations, how painters, like writers and scientists, reflected the change that is his main theme - the shift from belligerence to restraint, from upheaval to calm
