  • M. Michelle Jarrett Morris. Under Household Government

    Gloria L Main•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2014

Not until the emergence of the new social history almost half a century ago did the gender roles and sexual behavior of early Americans become objects of sustained historical inquiry. Early efforts were heavily demographic and descriptive in content, but feminist historians quickly broadened the nature of the genre while rejecting its obsession with numbers. In the two works under review here, authors M. Michelle Jarrett Morris and Mark E. Kann t…

  • Women on the Edge

    Gloria L Main•ARTICLE•Journal of the Early Republic•2012•Referências: 5

The port cities of the early republic were creatures of a dynamic but volatile international economy, highly susceptible to sudden shocks and the ups and downs of unpredictable business cycles. Because the urban job market depended on long-distance trade, employment and wages rose and fell with the level of commerce. City inhabitants strove to ride the crests and cushion the shocks, but how well did they do, for themselves and for each other? The…

  • Stray Wives

    Gloria L Main•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2006

“Early national” here means 1790 to 1830, and “New England” is represented by Hartford County, Connecticut; Windsor County, Vermont; and occasionally all of Vermont. Mary Beth Sievens uses desertion notices in newspapers and divorce cases to explore the condition of married women in a period she characterizes as one of unusual economic and social change. Most of the notices were inserted by husbands as public warnings that they would no longer be…

  • Rocking the Cradle

    Gloria L Main•ARTICLE•The Journal of Interdisciplinary…•2006•Citada por: 8•Referências: 9

Between 1790 and 1840, median completed family size in New England genealogies fell by half. Age at marriage rose only moderately during this period, but the rate of premarital pregnancy plummeted, intervals between births lengthened, and mothers' age at last birth fell to thirty-seven. Analysis of the number of children born to a subset of mothers younger than thirty in various Connecticut and New Hampshire towns c. 1818 suggests that couples' m…

  • Peoples of a Spacious Land

    Gloria L Main•BOOK•Peoples of a Spacious Land•2004

In this book about families--those of the various native peoples of southern New England and those of the English settlers and their descendants--Gloria Main compares the ways in which the two cultures went about solving common human problems. Using original sources--diaries, inventories, wills, court records--as well as the findings of demographers, ethnologists, and cultural anthropologists, she compares the family life of the English colonists…

  • Purchasing Identity in the Atlantic World

Gloria L Main, Phyllis Whitman Hunter•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2002

The merchants of the title were the richest businessmen of Boston and Salem. All were involved in shipping, but they also ran local businesses, loaned money, and underwrote insurance. Many, though not all, served in local or provincial office, patronized local artists and craftsmen, and dispensed charity. In the later colonial period, they belonged to numerous clubs and subscribed to social libraries. The argument of the book, such as it is, is t…

people did not own guns before the middle of the nineteenth century because guns had been too expensive, unreliable, and not all that useful.1 The advent of mass production and aggressive advertizing by domestic arms manufacturers, Bellesiles argues, boosted the levels of ownership, contributed to rising rates of interpersonal violence among white men, and created a national gun culture centered on the possession and display of firearms. of Massachusetts and Maryland The distribution of wealth in America is highly unequal now and was even more unequal a hundred years ago. If the distribution of slaves in I790 is a trustworthy guide, inequality, in the South at least, was already high in the earliest years of the Republic (see Table I). T has always been something of a mystery how the people of rural J New England made a living on that rocky land. Alice Hanson Jones depicted the region on the eve of the Revolution as America's poorest, while Kenneth Lockridge has argued the stark Malthusian logic of too many people trying to occupy too little space. Robert A. Gross documented the erosion of family life in Concord that followed, equally logically, on the increasing necessity of s…
