“In the Streets, You See Nothing but Muslims!”
In 1717, an anonymous petition to the king of Spain expressed concern about the excessive number of Muslims living in Cartagena (Murcia). This complaint prompted the Council of Castile to launch a survey of the Muslim population with the aim of clarifying their status. In addition to galley slaves, the inquiry focused in particular on libertinos , a little-known category of slaves who lived and worked freely in the city but were heavily indebted …
The Maghrib in Europe
Did a slave mosque really operate for decades, out in the open, during the eighteenth century in the port city of Cartagena in Murcia, Spain? An alarmed Inquisitorial report submitted to the Spanish king in September 1769 left no room for doubt — the hospital of the Muslim arsenal slaves in Cartagena functioned as a mosque.1 Its live-in muezzin recited the adhān, the call to worship, from a room on the second floor, and believers convened twice a…
In early modern Castile, the administration of inheritances in abeyance (abintestatos) and goods of uncertain property (mostrencos) has been the subject of intense conflicts between competing institutions. Cities, convents, lords, corporations have, in different degrees, claimed rights over these properties, by custom or ancient privileges. Despite early statements, the royal treasury did not easily impose itself against these local actors. The C…
This article examines the ephemeral War Ministry which had been held by the Duke of Montemar between 1737 and 1741. This experience is situated in the political context of the Bourbon’s Army since the end of the War of the Spanish Succession, which was dominated by powerful lobbies of “felipistas” veterans, particularly present in the Royal Guards. Hence, the War Ministry has been an attempt to centralize from above the different branches of the …

La hora felipista del siglo XVIII
This work studies the reasons of the preservation of the Flemish nation’s privileges in the Spanish Bourbon army during more than a hundred years after the dismemberment of the Spanish Monarchy in Europe. This paper underlines that the renewal of the Flemish privileges by king Philip V of Spain was a key factor of the regeneration project of the Spanish nobility during the Spanish War of Succession, in order to favour the most faithful families t…
