  • France, you love it but leave it

    Olivier Esteves•ARTICLE•Modern & Contemporary France•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 5

In a context when Islamophobia peaked in the wake of the 2015 terrorist attacks, evidence has been mounting that a growing number of French Muslims have been leaving the country. This article explores, through a combination of quantitative (survey) and qualitative (semi-directed interviews) methods, some of the key drivers of this flight from France. Moral panics around secularism but more crucially questions of discrimination on the job market a…

  • The ‘Scots porridge case’ of 1969

    Olivier Esteves•ARTICLE•Patterns of Prejudice•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 4

In November 1969, a quite odd and ludicrous case of alleged discrimination was blown out of all proportion, perhaps wilfully, by Conservative politicians and the media in Britain, some eighteen months after Enoch Powell’s Birmingham speech. A quite high-profile issue at the time, the case has now been completely forgotten. Yet, Esteves’s article suggests that the event itself is helpful to make better sense of the British—rather than merely Engli…

  • Cross-Channel Welfare Chauvinism

    Open Access•Olivier Esteves•ARTICLE•Revue française de civilisation…•2020

This article provides a comparison of welfare chauvinism responses in France and England, and demonstrates that there is in the latter a much deeper rootedness of such nativist dynamics, not only vis-à-vis France, but also when compared with other European countries. The article also interrogates top-down and bottom-up approaches in the social sciences, particularly as they apply to welfare chauvinism. The extreme interconnectedness between the t…

  • Olivier Richomme, Race and Partisanship in California Redistricting from the 1965 Voting Rights Act t

    Open Access•Olivier Esteves•ARTICLE•IdeAs•2020

  • Babylon by Bus? The dispersal of immigrant children in England, race and urban space (1960s–1980s)

    Olivier Esteves•ARTICLE•Paedagogica Historica•2018

The history of forced dispersal of immigrant children in England, which affected mostly non-Anglophone Asian pupils in areas such as Southall (West London) and Bradford (West Yorkshire) in the 1960s and 1970s has only very recently elicited the interest of historians. Mobilising archival material as well as interviews with formerly bussed pupils, this paper seeks to contribute to the ongoing debate on the education and integration of immigrant ch…

    Olivier Esteves, Romain Garbaye•ARTICLE•Mouvements•2015
