One thousand and sixty-nine Israeli adolescents (males = 539, females = 530), aged 16–19, were sampled from 19 high schools. The following instruments were used: a gambling behaviour scale; a PG …

  • Smoking trends among adolescents from 1990 to 2002 in ten European countries and Canada

Open Access•Anne Hublet, Dirk De Bacquer et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2006

Among adolescents in Europe, three groups of countries in a different stage of the smoking epidemic curve can be identified, with girls being in an earlier stage than boys. In 2002, large differences in smoking prevalence between the countries have been observed. This predicts a high mortality due to smoking over 20-30 years for some countries, if no policy interventions are taken

Nehami Baum, Giora Rahav et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Divorce & Remarriage•2005

This study, conducted on a heterogeneous sample of 70 divorced custodial mothers in Israel, explores changes in the self-concept of divorced women. Findings showed that most of the study participants saw themselves as having changed, and improved, in the surveyed aspects of self-concept. Comparing their present situation to that before their divorce, most reported that they became more independent, more in control of their lives, and more respons…

The social wor…

The main corpus, which will comprise about 90% of the entire collection, will be sampled statistically. For analytical purposes it will use a concep…

  • Cross-national variations in violence

    Open Access•Giora Rahav•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•1990•References: 11

This study tries to explain why modernization is positively associated with property offenses, while it is negatively correlated with violent offences. The explanation is based on sociobiology and on the distinction between r and K evolutionary strategies. It is argued that modern societies are more likely to benefit from channeling their aggressive drive to the relatively less serious property crimes. Another derivative from the same theoretical…

  • External Restraints and Suicide and Homicide Rates

    Open Access•Giora Rahav, Leo Ziv•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1988

Research on lethal violence suggests that economic stress is associated with high rates of homicide, while economic well-being is correlated with relatively high suicide rates. Henry and Short explained these trends as a tendency to direct aggression toward the environment under conditions of external stress and restraint and toward the self in the absence of such conditions. In the present study this hypothesis was tested on a sample of 19, most…

  • Anxious' and 'reckless' drivers

Shlomo Shoham, Shlomo Giora Shoham et al.•ARTICLE•Deviant Behavior•1984•References: 4

This paper presents personality profiles of two types of recidivist traffic offenders. One is the “anxious” traffic offender who imputes legitimacy to traffic norms, yet due to innate structural personality defects, he tends to enter into a state of anxiety, when confronted with risky traffic situations or a traffic jam. The other type is the “reckless” driver, who does not impute legitimacy to traffic norms nor to other legal norms. From this pe…

  • Homicide and Death Penalty: A Cross-Sectional Time Series Analysis

    Giora Rahav•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1983•Cited by: 1•References: 11

Studies of the effect of the death penalty are typically either (1) cross-sectional studies, comparing murder rates across abolitionist and retentionist political units, or (2) longitudinal studies, comparing murder rates across different periods within the same polity. Each of these methods has its own faults and none yielded consistent, clear-cut results. The present study is based upon pooled time-series analysis of data from 17 countries for …

    Open Access•Giora Rahav•ARTICLE•Criminology•1981•Cited by: 1•References: 9

Society is not static; rather, it changes over time, and for this reason, the concept of social control takes on dynamic properties. At a most basic level, the intention of social control is to maintain coherence within the social order. Some degree of stability is necessary if this purpose is to be accomplished; however, stability should not be interpreted as synonymous with social control. A society must adapt to its changing internal and exter…

  • Ethnic Origins and the Disposition of Delinquents in Israel

    Giora Rahav•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1980•References: 9

Theoretical considerations lead to the hypothesis that the dispositions of juvenile cases affecting Oriental Jews will be harsher than those affecting European Jews in Israel. Further, that Arab juveniles will be dealt with more harshly than will either European or Oriental Jews. Analysis of official delinquency data reveals that this is the tendency. However, the authoritarian structure of the Arab community rather than prejudice explains the di…

Many Israeli Arabs are facing severe culture-conflicts as a consequence of two social processes. First, there is the increasing frequency of contact with Jews, and second, there is the process of rapid modernization which involves secularization, disorganization of traditional social structures and changing norms. In this study the criminality of rural Arabs in Israel is analyzed in terms of culture-conflict. Interviews with prisoners and non-pri…

The aim of the study is the examination of the actual process of eruption of the violent act. The study, therefore, concentrates on a stimulus-response interaction and examines the nature of the provocation, the nature of the reaction, and the relationship between the two factors. These three components constitute one cycle, and each cycle acts as a stimulus to the subsequent one. If the first cycle of interaction is not clear to the parties, the…
