Tobit and the »Torah for Exile« in Light of the Qumran Texts
The recent decades have seen a surge of interest in the deuterocanonical books, namely, the Jewish works incorporated in the Christian Scriptures. Among them, the book of Tobit has garnered particular attention since recent findings shed new light on this work. Three such discoveries had a major impact on the study of Tobit.
Damascus Covenant , the (Dead Sea Scrolls)
The Damascus Covenant , a text known from both the Cairo Genizah and the Dead Sea Scrolls, describes the covenant concluded by the Qumran community during a sojourn in Damascus. The work was probably assembled in the late second or early first century bce although some components may have been composed earlier.
Community Rule , the (Dead Sea Scrolls)
The Community Rule is a compilation of regulations and ideas of the group whose library and literature were found at Qumran. The work survived in thirteen copies found among the scrolls, the oldest and most complete copy is that discovered in Qumran cave 1 (1QS), penned around 100–75 bce . This copy also contains two other rules, the Rule of the Congregation (1QSa) and the Rule of Benedictions (1QSb).

The Dynamics of Language and Exegesis at Qumran
The discovery of the Qumran scrolls sixty years ago revolutionized our understanding of the development and exegesis of the Hebrew Bible. It became clear that both are mutually involved processes which started during the final stages of the Hebrew Bible and went on until its final canonization around 100 CA. Dated as they are between 300 BCE - 50 CA, the Qumran documents are placed precisely at the crucial stages of these developments. The recent…
The Dynamics of Language and Exegesis at Qumran
The authors in this volume address a series of issues raised by the discovery and publication of the Dead Sea Scrolls, centered around the Hebrew Bible and its interpretations in the Dead Sea Scrolls and related ancient Jewish compositions.
The Dynamics of Language and Exegesis at Qumran
Exegesis and Time in the Pesharim from Qumran
The authors of the Pesharim from Qumran interpreted biblical prophecies in symbolic and allegoric manner. They read into these prophecies allusions to events of their own times. This type of actualization was applied even to prophecies which were said in the Hebrew Bible to have been fulfilled in the past. This exegetical method, which assumes that a prophecy may be fulfilled more than once, is illustrated by three examples : the interpretation o…

The Dead Sea Scrolls
A fortieth anniversary is an occasion to be marked under any circumstances, especially when it concerns a discovery as significant as that of the Dead Sea Scrolls. The proper way to mark this occasion was to organize a symposium that would be as comprehensive as possible, both in content and in variety of approaches, and which would be held in the land of the Scrolls. The papers here reflect not only the variety and richness of subjects treated b…
