  • Neighbourliness and Situational Factors: Explaining Neighbour Behaviour in Attacks and Rescues of Sikhs in Delhi in 1984 and Muslims in Ahmedabad in 2002

    Open Access•Raheel Dhattiwala•ARTICLE•Sociology•2023•References: 27

Studies find a direct association of collective violence with relational distance: lower the relational distance, lower the violence. Where people live as neighbours, spatial proximity provides more opportunity for contact. However, perpetrators of mass violence are often neighbours who had previously coexisted with their victims in apparent harmony. Neighbour-on-neighbour violence is a social violation: it shakes our confidence in the collective…

  • Circles of Peace. A Video Analysis of Situational Group Formation and Collective Third-Party Intervention in Violent Incidents

Open Access•Don Weenink, Raheel Dhattiwala et al.•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Criminology•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 32

We seek to understand collective third-party intervention in violent incidents. Based on analyses of 131 video clips captured on mobile phones, we argue that bodily alignment between bystanders creates situational groups that encourage collective de-escalatory action. Qualitative analysis reveals that third parties generate situational groups when they create circular formations, providing greater opportunities to notice each other’s monitoring o…

  • Mapping the self: Challenges of insider research in a riot-affected city and strategies to improve data quality

    Open Access•Raheel Dhattiwala•ARTICLE•Contemporary South Asia•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 29

Ethnic riots in India rarely lead to convictions of perpetrators and redress for victims. By implication, antagonisms prevail years after violence has ceased and victims often find themselves sharing everyday spaces with their attackers. The task of identifying the risk factors leading to ethnic violence as well as the nuances of coexistence for individuals ridden with memories of violence and prejudice is rife with methodological and ethical cha…

  • The Political Logic of Ethnic Violence: The Anti-Muslim Pogrom in Gujarat, 2002

Open Access•Raheel Dhattiwala, Michael Biggs•ARTICLE•Latin American Politics and Society•2012•Cited by: 28

Ethnic violence in Gujarat in 2002 killed at least a thousand Muslims. Compiling data from the Times of India, we investigate variation across 216 towns and rural areas. Analysis reveals the political logic of violence. Killing was less likely where the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was weakest, but was even less likely where the BJP was strong; it was most likely where the party faced the greatest electoral competition. Underemp…
