  • Decomposing Migrant Self-Selection: Education, Occupation, and Unobserved Abilities

    Open Access•Ilkka Kauppinen, Panu Poutvaara•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•2025•References: 18

The authors analyze self-selection and sorting of emigrants from Finland, using full-population administrative data. Their analysis focuses on employed Finnish citizens aged 25 to 54 years, who had no immigrant background. Findings show that emigrants are more educated, have higher earnings, and are more likely to have worked as managers or professionals when compared to those who did not emigrate (the stayers). These findings hold for short-term…

  • Breaking the silence: The effects of online social movements on gender-based violence

Open Access•Michele Battisti, Ilkka Kauppinen et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Political…•2024

This paper investigates the impact of online social movements against gender-based violence (GBV) on GBV-related crime. Using machine learning techniques, we construct a novel dataset tracking the prevalence of GBV-related social media movements on Twitter from 2014 to 2017. Matching this data with weekly FBI crime reports across U.S. states we estimate the effect of tweets related to GBV on GBV-related reported crime. Our econometric approach ai…

  • Internationalization of University Education: A Faculty Evaluation of the Department of Architecture, Al-Nahrain University, Iraq

Open Access•Farah Raad, Jumaa Nawfal et al.•ARTICLE•International Society for the…•2023

Internationalization is one of the most important contemporary trends in higher education. It has become one of the most common references in the vocabularies commonly used by most universities all over the world. It is an important tool in academic developments as it aims to add and integrate international dimensions in teaching, programs, research and all higher education services of the universities. However, there is a lack of clarity about t…

  • Moody habitus: Bourdieu with existential feelings

Open Access•Keijo Räsänen, Ilkka Kauppinen•ARTICLE•Journal for the Theory of Social…•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 67

This paper proposes a way of integrating the concepts of habitus and mood. The purpose of this conceptual move is to enrich Pierre Bourdieu's treatment of habitus with a better recognition of its affective aspects. The paper draws on phenomenological studies of psychic disorders and applies the concept of existential feeling to specify what moods are and do. The framing proposed distinguishes between dispositions that function in the foreground a…

  • Self-selection of Emigrants: Theory and Evidence on Stochastic Dominance in Observable and Unobservable Characteristics

    Open Access•George J Borjas, Ilkka Kauppinen et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2019•Cited by: 27•References: 34

The Roy model has more precise predictions about the self-selection of migrants than previously realised. The conditions shown to result in positive or negative selection in terms of expected earnings also imply a stochastic dominance relationship between the earnings distributions of migrants and non-migrants. We test these predictions using the Danish full population administrative data. We find strong evidence of positive self-selection of emi…

  • Social mechanisms and strategic action fields: The example of the emergence of the European Research Area

    Open Access•Ilkka Kauppinen, Brendan Cantwell et al.•ARTICLE•International Sociology•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 28

The point of departure of this article is Fligstein and McAdam’s A Theory of Fields. It is argued that their theoretical framework would be strengthened by a more systematic focus in social mechanism-based explanations since this would increase understanding of how new strategic action fields (SAFs) emerge. This argument is illustrated by exploring the emergence of the European Research Area (ERA) as a SAF. In identifying social mechanisms the ar…

  • Towards a theory of transnational academic capitalism

    Ilkka Kauppinen•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology of…•2015•Cited by: 5•References: 33

This article draws attention to the relative lack of theoretically and methodologically elaborated approaches to understand and explain the complex relations between transnationalization of higher education and globalization seen especially from the point of view of global capitalism. The main aim of this article is to contribute to the construction of a theory of transnational academic capitalism (TAC). A theory of TAC argues that those networks…

  • Academic Capitalism in the Age of Globalization

Brendan Cantwell, Ilkka Kauppinen et al.•BOOK•Academic Capitalism in the Age of…•2014

Today, nearly every aspect of higher education - including student recruitment, classroom instruction, faculty research, administrative governance, and the control of intellectual property - is embedded in a political economy with links to the market and the state. Academic capitalism offers a powerful framework for understanding this relationship. Essentially, it allows us to understand higher education's shift from creating scholarship and lear…

  • The European Round Table of Industrialists and the restructuring of European higher education

    Ilkka Kauppinen•ARTICLE•Globalisation Societies and…•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 13

The restructuring of European higher education (EHE) since the 1980s is a widely studied subject. However, this paper argues that previous studies have paid insufficient attention to the role of transnational policy-making groups in this complex and multilevel process. This argument is supported by focusing on how the European Round Table of Industrialists (ERT) has participated in this restructuring since the mid-1980s. This paper's focus is esp…

  • A moral economy of patents: Case of Finnish research universities' patent policies

    Ilkka Kauppinen•ARTICLE•Studies in Higher Education•2014•Cited by: 4•References: 24

The primary objective of this paper is to demonstrate the usefulness of the concept of moral economy for higher education studies through a study of Finnish research universities' patent policies. Patent policies not only stimulate the commercialization of research, they also set norms for behavior and aim to clarify how to distribute rights and responsibilities during the commercialization of research results. My main research finding is that ev…

  • Different Meanings of 'Knowledge as Commodity' in the Context of Higher Education

    Open Access•Ilkka Kauppinen•ARTICLE•Critical Sociology•2014•Cited by: 12•References: 28

Commodification has been and still is one of the key processes within capitalist market economies. Since the 1970s, different forms of knowledge have increasingly been subjected to this process. In this paper the commodification of knowledge in the field of higher education is defined in a broad sense as an example of the intensive enlargement of capitalism. I argue that knowledge shares some features of public goods and can be subjected to commo…

  • A Shift Towards Academic Capitalism in Finland

  • Academic capitalism and the informational fraction of the transnational capitalist class

    Ilkka Kauppinen•ARTICLE•Globalisation Societies and…•2012•Cited by: 4•References: 15

This article is based on the idea that if we are witnessing an on-going shift towards the transnational phase of capitalism, this objective structural change should also be taken into account in higher education studies. In this sense, this article reflects the increased scholarly attention into the relationship between globalisation and higher education since the 1990s. The main purpose of this article is to contribute to these discussions by de…
