Innovation Hubs in Australian Public Universities: An Appraisal of Their Public Value Claims
The past decade has witnessed an increased presence of innovation hubs in Australian public universities. This has occurred against a backdrop of public universities, as public institutions, being expected to create value for their host nation. However, the types of public value that such hubs are aiming to create is not altogether clear. Using the theoretical prism of a priori public value, this study examines how the innovation hubs of Australi…
Australian attitudes towards innovation, work and technology: Towards a cultural explanation
Australia, despite its G20 status, has not been performing as well in innovation in high-technology sectors as its educational levels and sustained growth would suggest. Australia has found it difficult to emerge from an economy based on resources and agriculture to a services economy based on knowledge and the application of technology. Several reasons have been put forward over the years. This study considers one reason that has not been consid…
A hand-up or a hand-out? An argument for concierge services for the development of innovation capacity in startups
This study suggests that a concierge service, provided by governments, can assist startups to gain streamlined access to the services, capabilities and capital required to bring innovation efficiently and cost-effectively to market. It analyses a range of concierge models in five separate jurisdictions to determine best practice. The paper develops a rationale and working definition for a concierge service that will assist public sector managers …
Embedding SMEs in national systems of innovation: Participant perceptions of Australia's CRC‐P program
Governments throughout the world employ a variety of policy mechanisms to promote economy‐enhancing innovation, although the embedding of SMEs in national systems of innovation has generally proved problematic. The Australian Cooperative Research Centres – Projects Program represents a recent attempt to do precisely this. Interviews with participants in the first two rounds of the Program report high levels of satisfaction, but also highlight pot…
The Research Collaboration Paradox: A Tale of Two Governance Narratives in an Australian Innovation Setting
Australian government policy aims to exploit university–industry research collaboration to transform the nation from a ‘lucky’ country enjoying the riches of agribusiness and resource exploitation, to a ‘clever’ country, exporting ingenuity and innovation globally. The Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) program has operated for more than a quarter of a century, but successive modifications demonstrate an inherent tension between two governance na…
The Quest for Civilization: Encounters with Dutch Jurisprudence, Political Economy, and Statistics at the Dawn of Modern Japan
The Quest for Civilization illuminates the origins of modern Japan through the lens of its cultural contact with the Netherlands providing a rare contribution to the field in English-language literature. Following the "opening" of the country in the 1850s, Japan encountered Western modernity through a quest for knowledge personified by Nishi Amane and Tsuda Mamichi, two young scholars who journeyed to Leiden in 1863 as the first Japanese sent to …

The Business of America: The Cultural Production of a Post-War Nation. By Graham Thompson. London: Pluto Press, 2004. 189 pages. $75.00 (cloth). $24.95 (paperback). Graham Thompson, who teaches American literature at the University of Nottingham, has written an intriguing and informative study of how novels in the United States have changed from the 1940s to the present. His overview is also, for me, a very frustrating one. The first section of t…

The Truth about the Information Highway
At the end of November 1994, the truth about the information highway finally got out. Protesting the announcement of another 5,600 layoffs, 1,200 Bell-Atlantic employees in Pennsylvania wore T-shirts to work which graphically depicted themselves as Information Highway Roadkill. The layoffs were just the latest round of cutbacks at Bell-Atlantic, which have been matched by the elimination of jobs at the other giants of the telecommunications indus…

Telecommunications, Mass Media, and Democracy: The Battle for the Control of U. S. Broadcasting, 1928-1935
This book examines a critical point in US broadcasting in the late 1920s and early 1930s - the only period in which a strong opposition emerged to network-dominated, advertising-supported media such as radio. Although the opposition failed to secure airwaves for non-profit broadcasters, its critique of the formation and structure of early broadcasting anticipated much of today's most compelling media criticism
Rethinking the Modern Sense of Wonder
IN MARVELOUS POSSESSIONS, STEPHEN GREENBLATT EXPLORES THE BENIGN and destructive aspects of sense of wonder with which Renaissance Europeans reacted to their discovery of Americas. He illuminates this sense of wonder by focusing on anecdotes. As is appropriate for voyagers who thought they knew where they were going and ended up in a place whose existence they had never imagined, he writes, the discourse of travel in late Middle Ages and Renaissa…

Then, suddenly and without warning, the tragedy of World War I burst upon this generation and a…

Conservatism in the USA
The problem of defining conservatism in the United States since 1945 is a complex one. The majority of cultural leaders during this time have called themselves liberals but have defined liberalism as the defence of the established institutions in the country. On the other hand, some of the minority who have called themselves conservatives define conservatism as the defence of liberal principles. This strange pattern has its roots in the reform mo…
