Devices for illuminating defended subjectivities in complex qualitative case interpretation: An example from recent BNIM practice
For a long time now, fairly central to what has emerged as ‘psychosocial studies’ has been the notion of psychosocietal ‘defendedness’. This is the psychoanalytic notion that people (not excluding social science researchers) must be understood in general as being ‘defended subjectivities’. This immediately raises the question of the ‘defended researcher’ being sensitive to – and having procedures for detecting and interpreting the working of – su…
Facilitating the voice of disabled women: The biographic narrative interpretive method (BNIM) in action
This paper demonstrates that bringing the Biographic Narrative Interpretive Method (BNIM) to disability studies, under a qualitative narrative approach, promises to further develop the field. The article shows the effectiveness of the interviewing techniques of the method in facilitating the voice of marginalised minority groups and in particular disabled women. Biography and social exclusion in Europe: Experiences and life journeys
Throughout Europe, standardised approaches to social policy and practice are being radically questioned and modified. Beginning from the narrative detail of individual lives, this book rethinks welfare predicaments, emphasising gender, generation, ethnic and class implications of economic and social deregulation. Taking an innovative socio-biographical approach to comparative social policy, it argues that understanding individually differentiated…

The Turn to Biographical Methods in Social Science
A Biographical Turn in the Social Sciences? A British-European View
Biographical research is increasingly used for understanding current historical and cultural changes and for purposes of education, training, and policy development. This "biographizing" movement is part of a broader picture of shifting configurations of concerns, concepts, and methodologies. In 2000, the introduction to the authors' The Turn to Biographical Methods in Social Science attempted such a picture. The authors wanted to promote greater…

Student Power: What Is to Be Done
Until this year, Britain, perhaps uniquely, has lacked any significant student movement. During the past 15 years sections of British students have played an active, if not predominant role in the agitation over Suez, campaigns against racism and colonialism, and, most auspiciously, cnd. But none of this
Southern Rhodesia
Whenever there has been an attempt to raise the problem of the racist régime in Southern Rhodesia—whether in the United Nations, the House of Commons or elsewhere—the British Government has always sought to protect the régime by pleading first that it is a matter which concerns London
