Tree-ring analysis of traditional native bark-stripping at Ship Island, Southeast Alaska, USA
Holocene Sea Levels in Southeast Alaska: Preliminary Results
Natural raised marine deposits and archaeological sites recently discovered in southeastern Alaska have been measured relative to mean sea level and radiocarbon dated. Plots of sites on Heceta and Prince of Wales islands are compared to those developed for British Columbia. The Heceta Island curve is comparable to that of the Queen Charlotte Islands, in which pre-Holocene shorelines were lower than present until about 10,000 B.P. and then rose to…
A Statistical Analysis of Tipi Ring Diameters At Sites Near Santa Rosa, New Mexico
A 1974 archaeological survey of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Los Esteros Reservoir and a 1978 archaeological survey independently conducted as part of dissertation research disclosed 11 tipi ring sites, providing a sample of 97 rings. Statistical methods are used to demonstrate that differences in the mean ring diameters of the sites are significant; three distributions are represented in the sample. Information obtained through surface coll…
Demographic Structure of Pecos Indians: A Model Based on Life Tables
Age-at-death data on over 2,000 burials from two pueblo sites in New Mexico are subjected to demographic analysis. Prior studies are reviewed to illustrate deficiencies and qualifications in the data base and the analytical method. The skeletal assemblage is subdivided into seven samples by chronological phase, and life tables are constructed. Aspects such as mortality and life expectancy are then examined for each phase and a diachronic model of…
