  • The chimera of choice in UK food policy 1976–2018

Open Access•Duika Burges Watson, Alan Draper et al.•ARTICLE•British Food Journal•2021

Purpose This paper presents a critical discourse analysis of “choice” as it appears in UK policy documents relating to food and public health. A dominant policy approach to improving public health has been health promotion and health education with the intention to change behaviour and encourage healthier eating. Given the emphasis on evidence-based policy making within the UK, the continued abstraction of choice without definition or explanation…

Open Access•Gemma Phillips, Christian Bottomley et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2014•Cited by: 5•References: 27

BACKGROUND: We report the main results, among adults, of a cluster-randomised-trial of Well London, a community-engagement programme promoting healthy eating, physical activity and mental well-being in deprived neighbourhoods. The hypothesis was that benefits would be neighbourhood-wide, and not restricted to intervention participants. The trial was part of a multicomponent process/outcome evaluation which included non-experimental components (se…

    Open Access•Arabella K M Hayter, Arabella Hayter et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2013

Good nutrition in the early years of life is essential, yet the diets of many pre-school children in the UK are known to be poor. Understanding the decisions parents make when feeding young children is very important in determining what type and nature of interventional support may be developed to promote good nutrition. The aim of this study was to explore using qualitative methods, parental perceptions of feeding their children in order to info…

The Medical Research Council has highlighted the importance of conducting developmental and exploratory rese…

  • Complaints about dog faeces as a symbolic representation of incivility in London, UK: A qualitative study

    Open Access•Jane Derges, R Lynch et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Public Health•2012

During a 'Well London' study, residents were asked about their neighbourhood and its environment. Above all other complaints, 'dog poo' was mentioned as a key concern. Despite low rates of infection and disease among the human population resulting from contact with canine faecal matter, the concerns of the public continue to rate it as a serious public health issue. Most public health studies, therefore, seek to identify processes of transmission…

  • OP07 What Shapes Participation in a Community-Based Intervention? Evidence from a Qualitative Evaluation of the Well London Project

Sumeet Jain, Alan Draper et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2012

Background This paper examines how individual and area-level contextual factors shape participation in a community-based development and health promotion intervention. The programme aimed to improve individual level health outcomes through…

  • Everybody Was Black Down There: Race and Industrial Change in the Alabama Coalfields

Alan Draper, Robert H Woodrum•ARTICLE•The Journal of Southern History•2008

In 1930, almost 13,000 African Americans worked in the coal mines around Birmingham, Alabama. They made up 53 percent of the mining workforce and some 60 percent of their union's local membership. At the close of the twentieth century, only about 15 percent of Birmingham's miners were black, and the entire mining workforce had been sharply reduced. Robert H. Woodrum offers a challenging interpretation of why this dramatic decline occurred and why…

  • Short cuts to safety: Risk and 'rules of thumb' in accounts of food choice

John Green, Judith Green et al.•ARTICLE•Health Risk & Society•2003

A number of 'food scares' over the past decade in Europe have generated considerable debate about public understandings of food risk, and the extent to which such understandings impact on decision making. This paper reports on a focus group study of how UK consumers discuss choosing safe food. Strategies for making food choices were, in general, characterised by confidence rather than anxiety. Although concerned in an abstract way with the safety…

Open Access•Alan Draper, Alizon Draper et al.•ARTICLE•Social Policy and Administration•2002•Cited by: 6

This paper argues that food safety did not arise as a “new” obsession at the end of the twentieth century, but has been an intermittent object of public and policy concern over the last two hundred years in the UK. However, the nature of food policy has shifted over that period, from an orientation towards protecting a largely ignorant public from fraud, through controlling the risks potentially arising from negligence in food–handling, to inform…
