  • Piaget and Personality: A Cognitive-Developmental Hierarchy of Ego Defense

    Open Access•David Elkind•ARTICLE•Human Development•2025

In this article, I will make the case that Piaget’s theory of egocentrism provides evidence for the relevance of his theory to the study of personality. It does so by providing the answers to the still open questions as to the conceptual status of Freud’s concept of ego defense. These are: (1) How does a positive adaptive species characteristic become a negative maladaptive individual personality trait? (2) What is the cognitive-developmental hie…

  • Painful Inheritance: Health and the New Generation of Fatherless Families

David Elkind, Ronald J Angel et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary Sociology A Journal…•1995

Painful is the first comprehensive examination of the impact of single motherhood on the physical and mental health of women and their children. Based on solid scientific information, it documents serious, long-term health consequences associated with the poverty and social disorganization in which such families often live. Ronald J. Angel and Jacqueline L. Angel show that the elevated health risks associated with single motherhood are largely th…

As part of the evaluation of this program, we examined not only children at the WOIS but also a control group attending public schools in various parts of the city. The control children were selected from names on the waiting list for acceptance into the WOIS and were matched with their WOIS counterparts for age, sex, race, socioeconomic status, and educational achievement. Among the non-academic measures employed as part of the evaluation batter…

This paper describes the different forms of egocentrism characteristic of each of the major stages of cognitive growth outlined by Piaget. Particular attention is paid to the egocentrism of adolescence which is here described as the failure to differentiate between the cognitive concerns of others and those of the self. This adolescent egocentrism is said to give rise to 2 mental constructions, the imaginary audience and the personal fable, which…

  • Varieties of Religious Experience in Young Adolescents

David Elkind, Sally Elkind•ARTICLE•Journal for the Scientific Study…•1962•Cited by: 1

IN his book, Varieties of Religious Experience, (1902), William James distinguished between institutional and personal religion. Institutional religion involves all the formal aspects of the Church and has as its central aim winning the favor of Gods. (op. cit., p. 40) Personal religion, on the other hand, involves the inner dispositions of man, whose conscience, helplessness, incompleteness form the center of interest. (op. cit., p. 40) In his w…

  • Piaget's Semi-Clinical Interview and the Study of Spontaneous Religion

David Elkind•ARTICLE•Journal for the Scientific Study…•1964

FOR research purposes it is convenient to distinguish between the spontaneous and the acquired religion of the child. The child's spontaneous religion consists of all those ideas and beliefs that he has constructed in his attempts to interpret religious terms and practices that are beyond his level of comprehension. For example, upon hearing that was everywhere, a boy refused to occupy his favorite chair for fear of sitting on God and thus reveal…
