Entrepreneurial innovation ecosystems in the United States: Configurational analysis of the high-tech economy
This study uses a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis of U.S. entrepreneurial innovation ecosystems. Doing so, it seeks to unveil different configurations of conditions that entail regions excelling in both high-tech entrepreneurship and innovation while paying particular attention to the role of knowledge spillovers and their respective channels. Overall, the results obtained suggest two distinct configurations, one characterized by highe…
Decoding cultural mechanisms: An FsQCA approach to Hofstede’s cultural dimensions and regional entrepreneurship
This study uses FsQCA to identify combinations of Hofstede’s cultural dimensions—specifically power distance, uncertainty avoidance, masculinity, and individualism—that lead to regional entrepreneurship in Europe. The analysis reveals two cultural configurations conducive to regional entrepreneurship: one emphasizing equality, tolerance for uncertainty, and cooperation, and another highlighting individual autonomy alongside the former two values.…

The effect of knowledge spillovers on regional new firm formation: The Greek manufacturing case
This research examines the effect of knowledge spillovers on new firm formation across Greek regions in manufacturing over the period 2002-2010. The econometric analysis results reveal that knowledge spillovers, as proxied by innovation and high-tech labor measures, positively affect regional new firm formation rates. Intra-sectoral spillovers, as captured by geographic sectoral specialization and industrial intensity, also positively affect regi…
Persistence and change in interregional differences in entrepreneurship: England and Wales, 1921-2011
The paper explores time-persistence in interregional differences of self-employment rates in England and Wales in the 1921-2011 period by using census data. The results suggest a strong path-dependence in entrepreneurship as past self-employment rates have strong bearing on future ones. However, there is also some rank mobility reflected in the upward movements of London boroughs and downward movements of primarily coastal areas. Rank mobility re…
On the spatial stickiness of UK new firm formation rates
This research explores persistence of new firm formation at the UK NUTS II level for the 1994–2007 period. The results obtained herewith suggest that interregional differences in new firm formation and their determinants are time persistent. The evidence produced shows that past new firm formation rates determine future ones and that, depending on the econometric specification, human capital, local industry structure, sources of external economie…

Socioeconomic Indicators for Analyzing Convergence: The Case of Greece: 1960–2004
Regional vs environmental policies for Balanced economic development: The case of the former Soviet Union
This article presents a method for analysing interregional differences and identifying a suitable combination of policies for a set of regions. The methodology is based on the development of a composite quality index and is illustrated using the case of the former Soviet Union in the early 1990s. The correlation between the quality of life values and the per capita European Union funding indicates that more funds are allocated to the countries wi…

Spatial Variations in New Manufacturing Plant Openings: Some Empirical Evidence from Greece
FOTOPOULOS G. and SPENCE N. (1999) Spatial variations in new manufacturing plant openings: some empirical evidence from Greece, Reg. Studies 33 , 219-229. This research deals with the determinants of regional variation in new plant openings in Greek manufacturing industries over the period 1980-91. Key findings of this first detailed attempt to do so in a Greek context relate to the significant direct effects of regional specialization, the exten…
Spatial Variations in Net Entry Rates of Establishments in Greek Manufacturing Industries: An Application of the Shift-Share Anova Model
Net entry rates of manufacturing establishments across Greek regions are examined here by means of both an appropriately modified conventional shift-share method and a linear-model variant. All results accord with earlier findings for UK regions, signifying that the main source of variation in spatial net entry patterns stems from within-industry variation in locational preferences across space. However, analysis by establishment size indicates t…
