The materiality of failed futures
Infrastructures for renewable energy are central to contemporary political responses to the imperative of decarbonization. As green technological promises gain momentum, it becomes crucial to examine not only what is newly emerging but also what is being rendered obsolete and left behind—the promised futures that turned out to have failed while new ones emerge as promising. This article addresses these debates by empirically examining the histori…
Approaching the ecological emergency
Scars of time
Postindustrial sites have garnered significant attention in the social sciences and humanities, particularly concerning the complexities of their abandonment. This article contributes to these debates by empirically examining the processes of valuation within the dynamics of abandonment, restoration, and resignification, with a focus on the Berguedà region in the Catalan Pyrenees. Specifically, we trace the landscape transformations caused by ope…
Modern infrastructures through the lens of classical sociology
Infrastructure-as a concept, word, and physical construct-is deeply intertwined with the shaping of modern societies. The term infrastructure emerged amidst the context of rapid societal changes brought by the Industrial Revolution, evolving from an initial specialized usage associated with railway development to a broader concept materially encapsulating 'sociotechnical imaginaries of modernity'. Therefore, an intriguing connection exists betwee…
Abandonar, transformar, recordar
Esplendor i decadència d’una colònia minera (2019). Flyn i Corominas furguen des de diferents geografies, mirades i escriptu…
Thinking through ruination
This introduction aims to present the main contributions of the two parts of the special section – titled “Thinking through ruination: theoretical and empirical approaches to the ruins of the Anthropocene”. The focus of this special section is to explore the anthropogenic ruins of our recent past within the current context of environmental challenges and threats. The compiled articles exemplify the significance of examining these ruins, highlight…
Voices of emergency
Sociological debates on the mobilising force of imagined futures are particularly relevant in our present context of climate emergency, where the claim-making of a 'threatened future' has come to the fore in civic mobilisations worldwide. This article addresses these debates by empirically examining how adverse views of the future underpinning present thematisations of climate change as an emergency shape collective action. Based upon qualitative…
Conspirituality in Covid-19 Times
This article focuses on the development of COVID-19 anti-vaccination movements in Spain and explores their relationship with the phenomenon of conspirituality. By using a mixed-methods approach combining big data analysis with small ethnographic data analysis, we examine how conspiracy theories and spiritual ideas circulate, merge and crystallize in particular practices and encounters in Spain. The big data analysis of Twitter conversations revea…
Religious Tastes in a Gentrified Neighbourhood
This article examines how religious diversity is manifested and represented in contexts undergoing intense urban pressures. Drawing on ethnographic research conducted in the Raval quarter of Barcelona, we analyse the open-air festivities of religious minorities and the emergence of new neighbourhood associations’ mobilizations. Specifically, we focus on the role of food in these events as a way to explore how diversification and urban transformat…
Boundaries in the Making
Total institutions have undergone profound changes since Erving Goffman published his seminal work Asylums in 1961. This article explores the persistence and transformation of total institutions under late-modern conditions. Based upon empirical research conducted in a female Benedictine monastery, I analyse changes in the physically bounded structure of a total institution. Specifically, I address the trend towards greater permeability and flexi…
Banal Catholicism, Morality Policies and the Politics of Belonging in Spain
The articulation between religion, politics and the law in contemporary European societies is a complex matter. In this article, we argue that classical secularization approaches fail to capture the ambivalent form of Catholicism in Europe, and we advance an alternative approach that reconsiders two elements: temporality and social space. Firstly, we propose to adopt an "eventful temporality", which enables the consideration of the impact of unex…
Beyond Narcissism
Holistic spirituality has often been characterized by academic literature as belonging to the private sphere, articulated through the market and anchored in the growth of narcissistic individualism. However, recent empirical evidence and theoretical developments suggest a more complex picture. Drawing on the analysis and comparison of two empirical cases-the organization of collective meditations in public spaces and the teaching of yoga in priso…
Las salas multiconfesionales en el contexto hospitalario catalán
Multifaith rooms are an emerging model for the management and accommodation of the religious diversity that proliferates in the health field. This article examines the micropolitics of the design of multireligious spaces in hospital contexts. Drawing on recent empirical evidence and the "material turn" in the study of religion, we focus on the material negotiations that underlie the creation of these religious spaces. The article is based on an e…
Banal is not Trivial
Recognizing religious groups is not only a question of granting rights, but also a question of the possibility of being perceived as unproblematic, especially in contexts where religion is a contested issue. Spain is a compelling case to examine this proposition. There, the rise of migration-driven religious diversity and the attacks of 11 March 2004 have led religious minorities into the sensitive terrain of ‘supra-visibility’. Drawing upon rese…
