Particular justice and its architectonics in Aristotle’s Ethica Nicomachea V
Effect of a portion-size default nudge on meat consumption and diner satisfaction: Controlled experiments in Stanford University dining halls
Reducing meat consumption, especially in high-intake countries such as the United States, is crucial in mitigating the climate and biodiversity crises and improving public health and animal welfare. Choice-architecture interventions or nudges in the food domain, such as choice defaults (e.g., reduced default portion sizes), can be powerful levers of behavior change. However, evidence remains limited in large-scale, real-life settings, and little …
Spectacular Technology, Invisible Harms: Witnessing Techno-science on Waste Tours in China
Investment in science, technologies, and infrastructures has been a critical aspect of China's development strategy since the early 2000s. China's national policies designated waste-to-energy (WtE) incinerators as the dominant end-of-life technology to bring about a form of modern and sustainable waste treatment that can turn waste into energy while eliminating pollution. Amid rising citizen skepticism over the safety and efficacy of this technol…
A labor of disassembly: Waste labor and embodied knowledge in China's circular economy
This article examines waste labor in relation to contemporary projects of green capitalism, specifically China's pursuit of the circular economy and the development of ecological cities. The circular economy repositions waste not as disposable matter but as a resource frontier, proposing its reintegration back into systems of production. China's adoption of the circular economy signals a shift in how waste is conceptualized at the center of the s…
Powering just energy transitions: A review of the justice implications of community choice aggregation
Cost-effectiveness of Increasing Buprenorphine Treatment Initiation, Duration, and Capacity Among Individuals Who Use Opioids
This modeling analysis simulated the effects of implementing several intervention strategies across the buprenorphine cascade of care and found that strategies that were concurrently associated with increased buprenorphine treatment initiation, duration, and capacity were cost-effective
Making Urban Environments: Infrastructures of Power, Resistance and Negotiation
As scholars from the fields of history, anthropology and animal studies, as well as landscape planning and management, we discuss various forms of urban and urbanising infrastructures and their political entanglements. Questioning and illuminating how various actors and their practices build and shape urban environments, we address topics ranging from the black soldier fly - used as biotechnological infrastructure to manage waste - to other nonhu…
Circularity and Enclosures: Metabolizing Waste with the Black Soldier Fly
This essay traces a scientific pilot project to transform the black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) into a biotechnology to treat urban organic waste in accordance with the dominant cultural logics of an ecologically modern approach to waste management in contemporary China. A principle of urban waste management, circularity, and a spatial logic of urban living, enclosures, condition the scientific intervention that promises to harness animal met…
Sexist Slurs: Reinforcing Feminine Stereotypes Online
Social media platforms are accused repeatedly of creating environments in which women are bullied and harassed. We argue that online aggression toward women aims to reinforce traditional feminine norms and stereotypes. In a mixed methods study, we find that this type of aggression on Twitter is common and extensive and that it can spread far beyond the original target. We locate over 2.9 million tweets in one week that contain instances of gender…
What childhood obesity prevention programmes work? A systematic review and meta‐analysis
Previous reviews of childhood obesity prevention have focused largely on schools and findings have been inconsistent. Funded by the US A gency for H ealthcare R esearch and Q uality ( AHRQ ) and the N ational I nstitutes of H ealth, we systematically evaluated the effectiveness of childhood obesity prevention programmes conducted in high‐income countries and implemented in various settings. We searched MEDLINE ®, E mbase, PsycINFO , CINAHL ®, Cli…
