A bibliometric analysis on adolescent social anxiety and psychoeducational variables in Web of Science 2002–2021
The aim of this bibliometric analysis was to analyze the scientific output on adolescent social anxiety and its relationship with 15 psychoeducational variables in peer-reviewed journals during the period 2002-2021. The goal was to provide a comprehensive overview of the state of the art on adolescent social anxiety and academic/school achievement, performance, self-concept, self-esteem, self-efficacy, self-attributions, goals, attachment, adjust…
Mental health and clinical psychological science in the time of Covid-19
The stress before the storm
Evacuation experiences represent significant stressors that may put mothers and children at risk for PTSS and psychological distress. Resilience-building efforts should include efforts to better prepare families for prestorm evacuations, thereby reducing risk in mothers and youth and ultimately contributing to better psychosocial functioning. The role of empathy and social anxiety in Latinx adolescents' indirect peer aggression during the transition to high school
The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between decreased empathy (i.e., cognitive and affective) and indirect and cyber peer aggression among Latinx adolescents during their transition to high school. Further, we examined the degree to which social anxiety moderated this relationship. Participants were 469 Latinx ninth graders, ages 13–17 years ( M = 14.52, SD = 0.58; 58% girls). Adolescents completed the Revised Peer …
Neural vulnerability and hurricane-related media are associated with post-traumatic stress in youth
My Kids Are My Priority
Although families with children are particularly vulnerable in hurricanes, little is known about factors affecting families' evacuation decisions. Following Hurricane Irma, we evaluated multiple factors potentially influencing mothers' evacuation decisions and evacuation intentions for future hurricanes. Mothers of children under 18 years (N=536) completed an online survey assessing sociodemographic, hurricane-related, family, and psychological f…
Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents and School Anxiety Inventory
Alcohol and drug use among internationally adopted adolescents
Internationally adopted adolescents are at increased risk for mental health problems. However, little is known about problematic alcohol and drug use, which are important indicators of maladjustment. The aim of this study was to examine the level of problematic alcohol and drug use in internationally adopted adolescents compared to their nonadopted peers. The study is based on data from the youth@hordaland-survey, which was conducted in Hordaland…
Social Phobia and Educational and Interpersonal Impairments in Adolescence
Children’s sedentary activity after hurricane exposure
The current study examined the potential impact of a natural disaster, Hurricane Ike, on children’s levels of sedentary activity. Sedentary activity is a health risk behavior associated with poor chronic health outcomes. Hurricane exposure (perceived and actual life threat) and recovery stressors (hurricane-related and major life events) were expected to be associated with posttraumatic stress (PTS) symptoms and sedentary activity. Children (n 20…
Aversive Peer Experiences on Social Networking Sites
Cyber victimization is an important research area; yet, little is known about aversive peer experiences on social networking sites (SNSs), which are used extensively by youth and host complex social exchanges. Across samples of adolescents ( n =216) and young adults ( n =214), we developed the Social Networking-Peer Experiences Questionnaire ( SN-PEQ ), and examined its psychometric properties, distinctiveness from traditional peer victimization,…
Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents (SAS-A)
Children's state anxiety in reaction to disaster media cues
Weighing the Costs of Disaster
Disasters typically strike quickly and cause great harm. Unfortunately, because of the spontaneous and chaotic nature of disasters, the psychological consequences have proved exceedingly difficult to assess. Published reports have often overestimated a disaster's psychological cost to survivors, suggesting, for example, that many if not most survivors will develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD); at the same time, these reports have underest…

Reliability and Validity of the Chinese Version of the Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents
Adolescent Peer Relations, Friendships, and Romantic Relationships
This study examined multiple levels of adolescents' interpersonal functioning, including general peer relations (peer crowd affiliations, peer victimization), and qualities of best friendships and romantic relationships as predictors of symptoms of depression and social anxiety. An ethnically diverse sample of 421 adolescents (57% girls; 14 to 19 years) completed measures of peer crowd affiliation, peer victimization, and qualities of best friend…
Peer Crowd Affiliation and Internalizing Distress in Childhood and Adolescence
Concurrent and longitudinal associations between peer crowd affiliation and internalized distress were examined in a sample of 246 youth (148 girls, 98 boys). Children completed measures of depression, social anxiety, loneliness, and self‐esteem when they were in grades 4 to 6 (Time 1), and again 6 years later during adolescence (grades 10 – 12; Time 2). At Time 2, adolescents also reported their self‐concept and their identification with reputat…
Developmental and Gender Differences in Preadolescents' Judgments of the Veracity of Gossip
Hypothetical vignettes were used to examine 384 preadolescents' understanding of gossip in varying circumstances. Children correctly labeled talk about nonpresent others as gossip and considered it inappropriate. Skepticism was higher for gossip than for firsthand information and was greatest in the presence of cues suggesting that speakers were unreliable or harbored ulterior motives. Surprisingly, skepticism of gossip decreased with age. Attrib…
Friendship Qualities and Social-Emotional Functioning of Adolescents With Close, Cross-Sex Friendships
The significance of having close, cross-sex friendships in adolescence was examined with 223 adolescents in Grades 10 through 12. Adolescents with only same-sex friends were compared to adolescents
Social Anxiety Among Adolescents
Hurricane Andrew
This project was an exploratory examination of the effects of parental conflict and ethnicity on children's stress related to Hurricane Andrew. Three months following the disaster, 89 elementary school children from ethnically diverse two-parent homes were surveyed. Children rated their symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), perceived parental conflict, their anxiety level, and hurricane-related traumatic experiences. High parental con…
Symptoms of posttraumatic stress in children after Hurricane Andrew
The authors examined symptoms of posttraumatic stress in 3rd-5th grade children during the school year after Hurricane Andrew. From a conceptual model of the effects of traumatic events, 442 children were evaluated 3, 7, and 10 months postdisaster with respect to (a) their exposure to traumatic events during and after the disaster, (b) their preexisting demographic characteristics, (c) the occurrence of major life stressors, (d) the availability …
Social Anxiety Scale for Children-Revised
Examined the factor structure, internal reliabilities, and concurrent validity of a revised form of the Social Anxiety Scale for Children (SASC-R) with fourth through sixth graders (N = 587). Factor analysis on a subsample (n = 459) yielded three factors: Fear of Negative Evaluation From Peers, Social Avoidance and Distress Specific to New Situations, and Generalized Social Avoidance and Distress. Confirmatory factor analysis with another subsamp…

Development of the Social Anxiety Scale for Children
Although potentially important for understanding children's peer relationships, the construct of social anxiety in children has received very limited attention. The present study reports on the development of the Social Anxiety Scale for Children (SASC), a 10-item self-report measure. A total of 287 second through sixth graders completed the SASC and a self-report measure of trait anxiety (Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale) and were asses…
