  • Investigating Cultures of Equality

Dorota Golanńska, Dorota Golańska et al.•BOOK•Investigating Cultures of Equality•2022

This volume explores the processes of investigating cultures of equality and sets out an epistemological framework for generating a more just and response-able knowledge. It offers a tapestry of inventive, self-reflexive, collective, and situated praxis of conducting a politically informed research. Such efforts contest—or occasionally reinvent—the social and cultural worlds that we currently inhabit, in an attempt at building cultures of equalit…

  • Gender, Sexuality and Identities of the Borderlands

    Suzanne Clisby•EDITOR•BOOK•Gender, Sexuality and Identities…•2020

Drawing on border thinking, postcolonial and transnational feminisms, and queer theory, Gender, Sexuality and Identities of the Borderlands brings an intersectional feminist and queer lens to understandings of borderlands, liminality, and lives lived at the margins of socio-cultural and sexual normativities. \nBringing together new and contemporary interdisciplinary research from across diverse global contexts this collection explores the lived e…

  • Conjugal Relations and Stepchildren's Well-being

Open Access•Tanzina Choudhury, Sumena Sultana et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Issues•2020•References: 42

Drawing on qualitative research in Sylhet, Bangladesh, this article explores the patterns of conjugal relations of remarried women who have children from previous marriage(s). We are primarily concerned here with the potential impacts of remarriage for women and children's well-being. Regardless of gendered identity, it continues to be the case that the majority of Bangladeshi people are married only once. However, remarriage and polygamy are not…

  • A vindication of the rights of girls

Rachel Alsop, Suzanne Clisby et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Gender Studies•2019•References: 4

Between 2014 to 2016 we conducted mixed-methods research exploring girls’ experiences of growing up in the UK in the 21st century. We spoke to girls and young women between the ages of 10 and 24 in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland to gain a qualitative snapshot of what matters to girls. We also conducted the first quantitative study of a range of quality of life indicators disaggregated by age and gender in the UK to garner a statist…

  • Gendering happiness and its discontents

Suzanne Clisby, Suzanne Marie Clisby•ARTICLE•Journal of Gender Studies•2017•References: 17

Providing an introductory framework to the Special Issue: Gendering Happiness: the power of pleasure, here I consider the highly gendered and political contexts of happiness, pleasure, desire and the tyrannies of its converse discontents. As this special issue explores, pleasure and joy can be found in diverse contexts, but ones that are always intersectionally gendered and particularly situated. Just as the personal is political, happiness is no…

  • Gendering women

    Open Access•Suzanne Clisby, Julia Holdsworth•BOOK•Gendering Women•2014

Gendering Women is an engaging and accessible account of how constructions of femininity fundamentally affect women’s mental wellbeing through the life course. Led by women’s life history accounts of growing up and growing older in the north of England, this book shows how experiences of becoming and being a woman – in family life, education, employment, motherhood and situations of violence – both enable and erode self confidence and esteem. The…

  • Naturalising Distinctions

Mark Johnson, Suzanne Clisby et al.•ARTICLE•Landscape Research•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 26

This paper draws on Bourdieu's notion of 'the field', a contested domain of relations of power, as a way to think about the social relations of environmentalism. More specifically, we suggest that talk about the environment and its protection is an increasingly important arena of struggle for social legitimacy and distinction. We illustrate that point through a consideration of two situations in Costa Rica, drawing on our own and others' research…

  • Both 'One' and 'Other'

    M R Johnson, Mark Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Nature and Culture•2008

Cosmopolitans are frequently characterized as living and perceiving the world and their environment from a distance. Drawing on ethnographic work among a small group of Western migrants in Costa Rica, we complicate this portrayal in a number of ways. First, we demonstrate that these people think in similar kinds of ways as social theorists: they too are worried about living at a distance from place and are seeking what is, in their way of reckoni…
