  • Tailored information and the public support for carbon pricing in Germany

Open Access•Antonia Schwarz, Anna Stünzi et al.•ARTICLE•Ecological Economics•2026

Providing information about carbon pricing is widely considered to be key to increasing public support for it. A number of studies have analyzed such effects, but little attention has been paid to how changes to the design can enhance the effectiveness of information treatments. Typically, generic information with low affective appeal has been used. In contrast, this paper, drawing on recent research into the design of information provisions, emp…

  • How resilient is public support for carbon pricing? Longitudinal evidence from Germany

Open Access•Sabrina Sommer, Théo Konc et al.•ARTICLE•Ecological Economics•2026

The success of climate policies depends crucially on the dynamics of public support. Using unique longitudinal data from three surveys conducted between 2019 and 2022, we study the variations of public support for carbon pricing and revenue use in Germany. Using panel methods, we show that support is very persistent over time. However, people who incur high energy cost decrease their support. Regarding revenue use, we find that social cushioning …

  • Attitudes toward water conservation

Open Access•Manuel Frondel, Delia Niehues et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2025

Based on randomized information treatments that were embedded in a large survey among more than 6000 single-family homeowners from Germany, we investigate the malleability of attitudes toward water conservation and a variety of conservation policies. The empirical results indicate that respondents generally have a positive attitude toward water conservation. Information treatments that included balanced or negatively biased information about the …

  • Spatial distributive justice has many faces

    Open Access•Paul Lehmann, Erik Gawel et al.•ARTICLE•Energy Research & Social Science•2024•References: 21

Infrastructures for using renewable energy sources (RES) produce local benefits and burdens for communities in their vicinity. The spatial distribution of these local benefits and burdens is typically heterogeneous, which frequently raises concerns of spatial distributive justice. In this paper, we first develop an analytical framework to synthesize the literature in this field. Our framework highlights that approaches to spatial distributive jus…

  • Green SÖP Extended

Open Access•Manuel Frondel, Leonie Matejko et al.•ARTICLE•Jahrbucher fur Nationalokonomie…•2023

The proliferation of instruments targeted at combatting climate change necessitates evidence-based evaluation to identify strategies that are not only effective and cost-efficient, but also supported by the population. In Germany, the data needed to support such analysis is scarce, however. A rare exception is Green SÖP, a panel data set that was established within the project Eval-MAP funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF…

  • Local support of climate change policies in Germany over time

Open Access•Sebastian Levi, Ingo Wolf et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2023

Political conflicts about energy and climate change policies often have local implications, yet little is known about local public opinion towards these policies. Here, we estimate support towards 26 climate change mitigation policies for 402 German counties and for up to four points of time using multilevel regression and poststratification. We find that local support for climate policies varies by up to 60 percentage points across German counti…

  • The stability of personal traits and preferences in times of the Corona pandemic

Open Access•Manuel Frondel, Daniel Osberghaus et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science Quarterly•2023•References: 32

Based on panel data on around 5500 German households, this article analyzes whether the experience of financial losses due to the Corona pandemic has affected three kinds of personal traits and preferences: the willingness to take risks, patience, and the locus of control (LOC). Our empirical results indicate that patience and the LOC remain unchanged by the experience of pandemic‐related financial losses, whereas we find a negative effect of sev…

  • Intergenerational Value Similarity and Subjective Well-Being

Open Access•Christian Hoellger, Sabrina Sommer et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Issues•2023•References: 39

This investigation concentrates on the association of intergenerational value similarity and adult children's and parents' subjective well-being, on the linkage between relationship quality and subjective well-being. Mediation effects of the relationship quality on the associations between value similarity and subjective well-being were focused. The sample consisted of 600 adult German children (53.8% women) and their parents. Dyadic correlations…

  • The Social Sustainability Barometer 2017–2019

Leonie Matejko, Sabrina Sommer et al.•ARTICLE•Jahrbucher fur Nationalokonomie…•2022

A large majority of citizens supports the German transition toward clean energy production (Energiewende). Yet, the Energiewende involves a large suite of aspects that determine the support. The social sustainability barometer provides a comprehensive data base on a large variety of questions related to the Energiewende that was collected in three survey waves spanning from 2017 to 2019 among more than 6000 household heads

Open Access•Larissa Klick, Gerhard Kussel et al.•ARTICLE•Jahrbucher fur Nationalokonomie…•2021

Evaluating environmental questions is a crucial issue in today’s economic research and policy making. The Green-SÖP offers a comprehensive data base to enrich an empirically led scientific discourse as a survey data set on environmental and energy-related topics in Germany. The data set on more than 6000 households was collected by RWI – Leibniz Institute for Economic Research and partners between 2012 and 2016. The questions are very diverse and…

  • New clean energy communities in polycentric settings

    Open Access•Julia Blasch, N M van der Grijp et al.•ARTICLE•Energy Research & Social Science•2021

Given the gaps between EU ambitions regarding energy community development and the current reality of clean energy communities in Europe, we explore a research framework enabling viable multi- and interdisciplinary research into new clean energy communities. We offer a definition of new clean energy communities, discuss their potential for wider dissemination and identify four factors that contribute to the current mismatch between ambitions and …

  • Determining the efficiency of residential electricity consumption

    Open Access•Mark Andor, Mark A Andor et al.•ARTICLE•Empirical Economics•2021

Increasing energy efficiency is a key global policy goal for climate protection. An important step toward an optimal reduction of energy consumption is the identification of energy saving potentials in different sectors and the best strategies for increasing efficiency. This paper analyzes these potentials in the household sector by estimating the degree of inefficiency in the use of electricity and its determinants. Using stochastic frontier ana…

  • Do more chargers mean more electric cars

Open Access•Sabrina Sommer, Stephan Sommer et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

To reverse the trend of rising CO 2 emissions in the European Union’s (EU) transportation sector, several European governments have introduced programs that promote electric vehicles (EVs). One frequently cited impediment to their uptake is insufficient charging infrastructure. Drawing on panel data from Germany, this paper estimates the relationship between public charging infrastructure and the uptake of EVs. We specify models with fixed effect…

  • Reducing vehicle cold start emissions through carbon pricing

Open Access•Manuel Frondel, Clemens Marggraf et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

A large proportion of local pollutants originating from the road transport sector is generated during the so-called cold-start phase of driving, that is, the first few minutes of driving after a car has stood inactive for several hours. Drawing on data from the German Mobility Panel (MOP), this paper analyzes the factors that affect the frequency of cold starts, approximated here by the number of car tours that a household takes over the course o…
