The Ethnic and Family Nexus of Homeleaving and Returning Among Canadian Young Adults
Coupling a life course and social capital perspective, this article examines the influence of cultural and family diversity on homeleaving and home returning behavior of young adults. Survival analyses are performed on data from a survey of 1,907 Canadian young adults aged 19-35 of four distinct ethnic origins — British, Indo, Chinese, and Southern European. Ethnocultural factors are found to play a more important role in shaping the timing and p…
Gender Differences in the Influence of Economic, Lifestyle, and Psychosocial Factors on Later-life Health
Microbes and Us
This article provides an overview of microbes (viruses and pathogenic bacteria) in human history, with special focus on their emerging threat in societies that had appeared to have conquered them as significant takers of life. The relationship between microbes and mortality level is discussed, with reference to both developed and developing societies, which display different historical patterns regarding the timing and tempo of reductions in mort…
Culture and Co‐residence: An Exploration of Variation in Home‐Returning among Canadian Young Adults

Age at death due to ischemic heart disease: Gender differences
This paper investigates gender differences in the timing of ischemic heart disease (IHD) mortality among white Americans. Three age-at-death groupings are examined, using a model incorporating three types of independent variables: lifestyle, socioeconomic status, and biology/heredity. Logistic regression techniques are used to analyze National Mortality Follow-back Survey data. Three hypotheses drawn from the literature are tested: (1) that IHD m…

Pension Politics and Challenges: Retirement Policy Implications
Pensions in Canada have become political, with challenges and changes occurring, and likely to occur, on several fronts, including the dismantling of universality in Old Age Security, possible alterations in eligibility for Spouse's Allowance, the allocation of pension credits upon marital dissolution, issues of vesting and portability, coverage, rights of employers/employees with respect to pension funds, among others. In addition, there have be…

Religious Involvement and Life Satisfaction in Canada
This paper examines the relationship between religious involvement and self-reported satisfaction with life in general, and with six specific domains of life. The sample consists of persons aged 25–59 (N = 6,621) surveyed in 1985 in the first Canadian General Social Survey. Overall, there appears to be a positive association between religious involvement and satisfaction for both men and women. However, in British Columbia, where levels of religi…

Increasing Sex Mortality Differentials among Black Americans, 1950-1978
At the turn of the century the sex mortality ratio (SMR) for US blacks was 1.06; by 1950 the ratio had increased to 1.24 and in 1978 it was up to 1.76. While both whites and blacks exhibit a trend of increase in the SMR the pattern of the increase differs. Although blacks have experienced greater gains in mortality reduction than whites in this century the current racial difference in mortality is such that the life expectancy at birth of blacks …
Accelerating sex differentials in mortality: An analysis of contributing factors
An analysis of mortality rates documents that the well‐established female advantage in mortality continues to increase. Data from the U.S. census show that the sex differential in mortality has increased from 1.69 in 1963 to 1.82 in 1976. The age groups which show the most pronounced changes are youth (15–24), young adults (25–34), and old persons (75–84). Following Enterline (1961), we assess the major causes of death within each of these age gr…
Marriage in nineteenth‐century Canada
