  • No manner of hurt was found upon him'. The role of religiousness in the mental health effect of job insecurity

Open Access•Peter Douwe Van Der Meer, Thomas Van Huizen et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 35

This study examines how religiousness moderates the mental health effect of job insecurity, a prevalent stressor in modern societies. We use panel data from a representative, large sample of Dutch employees from 2008 to 2018. Exploiting the longitudinal nature of the data, we control for time-invariant unobserved heterogeneity. Our main results indicate that job insecurity negatively affects men's but not women's mental health. Religious employee…

  • Do more hours in center-based care cause more externalizing problems? A cross-national replication study

    Open Access•Catalina Rey‐guerra, H D Zachrisson et al.•ARTICLE•Child Development•2023

Whether high quantities of center-based care cause behavior problems is a controversial question. Studies using covariate adjustment for selection factors have detected relations between center care and behavior problems, but studies with stronger internal validity less often find such evidence. We examined whether within-child changes in hours in center-based care predicted changes in externalizing problems in toddlers and preschoolers (N = 10,1…

  • Is Social Inequality in School-Age Achievement Generated before or during Schooling? A European Perspective

    Open Access•Giampiero Passaretta, J Skopek et al.•ARTICLE•European Sociological Review•2022•Cited by: 6•References: 41

Social gaps in children’s educational achievement emerge early in life and remain stable over schooling. Does social origin constantly shape achievement or is social inequality in school just an echo of inequality settled before schooling? We extend the previous research by studying the origins of social gaps in language achievement among primary-school students in Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. Based on dynamic accounts of ski…

  • “Who’ll take the chair?” Maternal employment effects of a Polish (pre)school reform

Open Access•Yusuf Emre Akgündüz, Thomas Van Huizen et al.•ARTICLE•Empirical Economics•2021

This study examines the impact of preschool availability on the employment of mothers of preschool-aged children. We exploit a transitional phase of a 2009 Polish education reform that simultaneously lowered the primary school age from 7 to 6 and provided a statutory right to preschool to 5-year-olds. As a significant share of 6-year-old children moved into primary schools a year earlier, their preschool seats effectively became available for you…

  • Do children benefit from universal early childhood education and care? A meta-analysis of evidence from natural experiments

Open Access•Thomas Van Huizen, Janneke Plantenga•ARTICLE•Economics of Education Review•2018

  • Training in two-tier labor markets: The role of job match quality

  • Making Transitions Pay: An Assessment of the Dutch Life-Course Scheme

    Open Access•Thomas Van Huizen, Janneke Plantenga•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Policy•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 19

Introducing individual savings accounts into the system of social security may be an innovative way to reorganise European social security systems. This article examines the merits and drawbacks of this modernisation strategy using the Transitional Labour Market approach as a frame of reference. On the basis of normative criteria derived from this approach, we perform an evaluation of the Dutch life-course scheme ('Levensloopregeling'). This sche…
