  • The Development of Logic and Focus in Children's Writing

    Open Access•George M Young•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1985•References: 6

A model of syntax is proposed in which marked structures are conceived as the realization of modes of control that regulate the informational flow of the text at points of threatened discontinuity. Two of these modes are described which are concerned with relations of logic and focus. Evidence of their presence in the patterning of a corpus of children's writing is taken as a pointer to their relevance to the study of syntactic development

  • A Systemic Model of the Elaborated Code

    Open Access•George M Young•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1983•Cited by: 1•References: 11

The paper offers a refinement of a model of code elaboration grounded in the data of an earlier multivariate analysis of markers of code in spoken English. Four modes of the code are postulated to exist that pre-select routes of choice through the system networks of the semantic stratum

  • The Elaborated Code

    Open Access•George M Young•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1982•Cited by: 2•References: 9

Three "modes" of code elaboration were hypothesized to exist within the functional components of the semantic system which are realized through corresponding elements within the lexicogrammar. Principal components analysis of these elements in the monologue speech of a sample of teachers revealed an array of factors interpretable in terms of the hypothesized modes

  • Religion and Modernization in the Soviet Union

George M Young, Dennis J Dunn et al.•ARTICLE•Journal for the Scientific Study…•1979

  • Context and Complexity in Working Class Language

Open Access•J Philippe Rushton, JAMES RUSHTON et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1975•Cited by: 1•References: 10

The research consisted of a comparative analysis of the written language of a working-class group of subjects and a middle-class group, the aim being to test Bernstein's socio-linguistic theory of a class-based limitation to a restricted ' code. Both groups of subjects were given essay titles demanding different forms of stylistic treatment. The written language they produced was then analysed to assess and compare the degree of stylistic variati…
