  • Holocene tephra stratigraphy in four lakes in southeastern Oregon and northwestern Nevada, USA

    Open Access•Franklin F Foit, Peter J Mehringer•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2016

To better understand the regional tephra stratigraphy and chronology of northern Nevada and southern Oregon, tephras in archived cores, taken as part of the Steens Mountain Prehistory Project from four lakes, Diamond Pond, Fish and Wildhorse lakes in southeastern Oregon and Blue Lake in northwestern Nevada, were reexamined using more advanced electron microprobe analytical technology. The best preserved and most complete core from Fish Lake along…

  • Age and extent of the Ilopango TBJ Tephra inferred from a Holocene chronostratigraphic reference section, Lago De Yojoa, Honduras

    Open Access•Peter J Mehringer, Andrei M Sarna-Wojcicki et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2005

Eruption of central El Salvador's Ilopango Volcano early in the first millennium A.D. caused death, cultural devastation, and exodus of southern Mesoamericans. It also left a time-stratigraphic marker in western El Salvador and adjacent Guatemala—the Ilopango Tierra Blanca Joven, or TBJ tephra. Mineral suites and major element abundances identify a silicic volcanic ash in cores from Lago de Yojoa, Honduras, as Ilopango TBJ. This extends its repor…

  • The Age of Glacier Peak Tephra in West-Central Montana

    Open Access•Peter J Mehringer, John C Sheppard et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1984

At Sheep Mountain Bog, near Missoula, Montana, a late-glacial tephra, that probably fell in late summer, is preserved as an 8-mm-thick graded bed overlain by another 8 mm of redeposited ash mixed with lake deposits. Sediment surrounding the ash was 14 C dated to about 11,200 yr B.P. Electron-microprobe analyses of the volcanic glass and hornblende phenocrysts from this ash layer indicate that they are similar in major-element chemistry to those o…

  • Late-Glacial Vegetation and Climate at the Manis Mastodon site, Olympic Peninsula, Washington

    Open Access•Kenneth L Petersen, Peter J Mehringer et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1983

As the late Wisconsin Cordilleran Ice Sheet retreated, sediment accumulated in shallow depressions at the Manis Mastodon Archaeological site on the Olympic Peninsula, near Sequim, Washington. Pollen, plant macrofossils, and bones of mastodon, caribou, and bison occur within the lower 47 cm of these deposits. The fossil pollen and seed assemblages indicate persistence for 1000 yr (11,000–12,000 yr B.P.) of an herb-and-shrub-dominated landscape at …

  • A Pollen Record from Birket Qarun and the Recent History of the Fayum, Egypt

    Open Access•Peter J Mehringer, Kenneth L Petersen et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1979

Sediments and fossil pollen of two short cores from Birket Qarun, Egypt, reflect Nile floods, lake levels, and agricultural developments of the last 325 yr, and demonstrate the potential of a long and detailed record from the Fayum Depression. The chronology of these cores is inferred by correlation of historic events with changes in the fossil and sedimentary records. Subangular clay clasts and blocky structure resulting from occasional exposure…

  • Pluvial Lakes of North-Western Sudan

    C Vance Haynes, Peter J Mehringer et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1979•Cited by: 14•References: 7

The extreme desert of south-western Egypt and north-western Sudan has revealed traces of numerous small, shallow, rain-fed lakes, relict from earlier periods of less arid climate. In 1976, sites of such lakes at the oases of Selima, Laqiya Arba'in and Merga were studied. Samples of lacustrine deposits yielded sufficient carbonate material for radiocarbon dating, and values obtained indicate that the lakes dried up some 6000 years ago, occasioning…

  • A Technological Analysis of Projectile Points from a Burial, Amargosa Desert, Nevada

    Guy R Muto, Peter J Mehringer et al.•ARTICLE•KIVA•1976•References: 1

Salvage excavations of the Barnett Site, Nye County, Nevada, revealed burial pits, hearths, and midden dating to about 1950 B.P. Grave goods from one of the burials included five large obsidian Humboldt Basal Notch points and a bone tool. Analysis of these artifacts leads us to conclude that the points were manufactured shortly before their use as grave goods, specifically for that purpose, and most probably by a single person. The bone tool is m…

  • The Pollen Evidence for the Environment of Early Man and Extinct Mammals at the Lehner Mammoth Site, Southeastern Arizona

    Open Access•Peter J Mehringer, C Vance Haynes•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1965•Cited by: 5•References: 12

Fossil pollen is directly associated with a radiocarbon date, mammoth bones, and the same stratigraphic units in which mammoth, bison, tapir, and horse bones and Clovis artifacts were recovered at the Lehner site. The pollen evidence indicates that desert grassland occupied the San Pedro Valley of southeastern Arizona about 9000 B.C
