Older Vietnamese refugees' transnational digital social capital and its impact on social inclusion
In this article I focus on older Australian-Vietnamese refugees’ social capital, referring to Bourdieu’s capital approach, drawing on a narrative-biographical, ethnographic and qualitative network analytical study. To stay in touch with kin and the diaspora across distances the older refugees developed digital literacy. I term this form of capital ‘transnational digital social capital’. It is a consequence from the diasporic experience, as the lo…

The migration motive and transnational engagement nexus. A case study of transnational families between Cuba and Germany
This article examines the impact of migration and transnational families on social transformations in the country of origin. It links the analysis of structural forces such as economic, political and social transformations that promote emigration with family-household strategies, and simultaneously analyses the impact of migrants’ transnational activities on social transformation in the country of origin. Based on a biographical, family-historica…

Our comparative analysis highlights how national histories of migration and associated welfare regimes have given rise to different approaches to meeting the needs of older migrants. Germany has a prevalence of ma…

Transnational families in Cuba and Germany: On the Intersection Between Isolation, Restrictions, and Agency
This article will analyze the formation of transnational family networks between Cuba and Germany in the context of late socialist Cuba. Drawing on multi-sited field research with a biographical theoretical approach, I will discuss whether Cuban migration is an exceptional case and demonstrate how it challenges key assumptions of transnationalism theory; that is, growing simultaneity through the development of communication technologies and a sup…
