  • Re-Reading Zhang Taiyan against François Jullien

    Open Access•Joyce C H Liu•ARTICLE•Theory Culture & Society•2023•References: 1

This article challenges François Jullien's reading of Chinese thought based on his disjunction between ontology and shi, or propensity. According to Jullien, the Chinese history of ideas has been a never-changing entity in a homogeneous society for thousands of years. Jullien's juxtaposing and contrasting 'European thought' and 'Chinese thought' falls into the trap of cultural essentialism he wanted to avoid. Jullien's interpretation of shi also …

  • The logistics of neoliberal slavery

    Open Access•Joyce C H Liu•ARTICLE•Inter-Asia Cultural Studies•2022•References: 9

The rapidly rising global capitalism and the increasing competition of neoliberal markets have speeded up temporary migrant workers' flow and exacerbated labor extraction through a sophisticated logistics system that contributes to neoliberal slavery in the twenty-first century. This essay argues that the legal ideology of citizenship in contemporary societies has contributed to the legal production of illegality, and consequently, new forms of i…

  • Migrant Struggles in South Korea and Elsewhere

Manie, Manie Manie et al.•ARTICLE•South Atlantic Quarterly•2021

Bidduth, Syed, and Samar were dishonorably deported from South Korea about fifteen years ago while they were protesting for the rights of undocumented migrant workers. Since returning to their home countries, Bangladesh and Nepal, they have been practicing modes of solidarity that they learned during the years of struggle. Still, We Are Migrant Workers is a documentary film made to record their personal history, will, and current political projec…

  • Beyond borders

    Joyce C H Liu•ARTICLE•Educational Philosophy and Theory•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 2

This paper challenges the apparatus of knowledge in the reproduction of the nationalist narrative of historical trauma that leads to the making of exclusive nationalism and unequal citizenship, particularly in East and Southeast Asia. I take the case of the 1965-66 genocide in Indonesia as an example to illustrate how the cultural trauma that took place in the Cold War Era had marked the turning point for follow-up nation-building and the coopera…

  • Against Agamben

    Open Access•Joyce C H Liu•ARTICLE•Theory Culture & Society•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 2

In Kingdom and Glory, Agamben analyzed the dual perspective of the void, through the metaphor of the empty throne, in the governmental machine in the West. I engage with the ambiguous question of the void with regard to the concept of sovereignty through my reading of two Chinese intellectuals in the late Qing period, Liang Qichao (1872-1929) and Zhang Taiyan (1869-1936). This paper therefore addresses the question of sovereignty and the void in …

  • European-East Asian Borders in Translation

    Joyce C H Liu, Nick Vaughan-Williams•BOOK•European-East Asian Borders in…•2014

European-East Asian Borders is an international, trans-disciplinary volume that breaks new ground in the study of borders and bordering practices in global politics. It explores the insights and limitations of border theory developed primarily in the European context to a range of historical and contemporary border-related issues and phenomena in East Asia. The essays presented here question, rather than assume, the various borders between inclus…

  • Immanentism, Double Abjection, and the Politics of Psyche in (Post)Colonial Taiwan

    Joyce C H Liu•ARTICLE•positions asia critique•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 1

This essay discusses what I define as the psyche politics employed in the discourse of identity and of subjectivity in Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period (1895-1945), and how the use of such politics of psyche recurred in postcolonial Taiwan, especially in the discourse of the nativized Taiwanese subject of the recent decades under the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government (1990s to 2008). I use psyche politics to refer to the dis…
