Pandemic preparedness and Covid-19
BACKGROUND: National rates of COVID-19 infection and fatality have varied dramatically since the onset of the pandemic. Understanding the conditions associated with this cross-country variation is essential to guiding investment in more effective preparedness and response for future pandemics. METHODS: Daily SARS-CoV-2 infections and COVID-19 deaths for 177 countries and territories and 181 subnational locations were extracted from the Institute …
The impact of Covid-19 pandemic course in the number and severity of hospitalizations for other natural causes in a large urban center in Brazil
The COVID-19 pandemic may indirectly impact hospitalizations for other natural causes. Belo Horizonte is a city with 2.5 million inhabitants in Brazil, one of the most hardly-hit countries by the pandemic, where local authorities monitored hospitalizations daily to guide regulatory measures. In an ecological, time-series study, we investigated how the pandemic impacted the number and severity of public hospitalizations by other natural causes in …
Global, regional, and national burden of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, 1990–2016
BACKGROUND: The number of individuals living with dementia is increasing, negatively affecting families, communities, and health-care systems around the world. A successful response to these challenges requires an accurate understanding of the dementia disease burden. We aimed to present the first detailed analysis of the global prevalence, mortality, and overall burden of dementia as captured by the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk …
Burden of disease in Brazil, 1990–2016
BACKGROUND: Political, economic, and epidemiological changes in Brazil have affected health and the health system. We used the Global Burden of Disease Study 2016 (GBD 2016) results to understand changing health patterns and inform policy responses. METHODS: We analysed GBD 2016 estimates for life expectancy at birth (LE), healthy life expectancy (HALE), all-cause and cause-specific mortality, years of life lost (YLLs), years lived with disabilit…
Global, regional, and national incidence, prevalence, and years lived with disability for 310 diseases and injuries, 1990–2015
BACKGROUND: Non-fatal outcomes of disease and injury increasingly detract from the ability of the world's population to live in full health, a trend largely attributable to an epidemiological transition in many countries from causes affecting children, to non-communicable diseases (NCDs) more common in adults. For the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2015 (GBD 2015), we estimated the incidence, prevalence, and years liv…
Cohort Profile
Chronic diseases are a global problem, yet information on their determinants is generally scant in low- and middle-income countries. The Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil) aims to contribute relevant information regarding the development and progression of clinical and subclinical chronic diseases, particularly cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, in one such setting. At Visit 1, we enrolled 15 105 civil servants from pre…
Maternal education, anthropometric markers of malnutrition and cognitive function (Elsa-Brasil)
Early exposure to adverse social and nutritional conditions appear detrimental to semantic memory, learning, concentration, executive control and language among adults, independent of adulthood educational achievement
Questionario do Elsa-Brasil
Tabagismo passivo no Brasil
SP1-86 Follow-up and incident outcomes in a longitudinal study in Brazil (Elsa-Brasil)
Introduction Baseline data from Longitudinal Study of Adults Health (ELSA—Brasil), a cohort that investigates incidence and predictors of chronic diseases among 15 000 civil servants aged 35–74 years from six universities in Brazil, was fully accomplished in December 2010. From now on, main challenges are: avoid loss to follow-up over time, correct identification, and classification of incident outcomes. Methods Follow-up data collection relies o…
SP4-14 Passive smoking in Brazil
Introduction Passive smoking has been linked to an increased morbid-mortality risk, mainly by cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. This is first Brazilian nationwide study that describes indoor passive smoking, at home and at work, among participants (15+ years) of the “Special Research on Smoking,” a sub-sample of the PNAD2008, a representative national home survey. Methods Non-smokers who reported exposure to indoor household smoking were c…
P2-235 Verbal fluency tests reliability in a Brazilian Multicentric Study, Elsa Brasil
Introduction Because of the pronounced and fast population ageing of low and middle-income countries, dementia is now a leading cause of disability. Verbal Fluency Tests (VFT) were used to assess cognitive functions in ELSA (Longitudinal Study of Adults’ Health - Brasil), a cohort that investigates incidence and predictors of chronic diseases among 15 000 civil servants (35–74 years old). The performance in VFT needs to be evaluated by a trained …
P2-464 Incidence and main causes of severe maternal morbidity in SÃo LuÍs/MaranhÃo-Brazil
Introduction The evaluation of severe maternal morbidity has been used in the monitoring of maternal health. The objective of this study is to estimate its incidence and main causes in São Luís-Maranhão, one of the poorest cities in Brazil. Methods A prospective longitudinal study, carried out in two public high risk maternity clinics and two intensive care units (ICUs) of reference to obstetrical cases of the city. During the period of 1 March 2…
Perfil de risco cardiovascular e autoavaliação da saúde no Brasil
The high prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors in Brazilian adults underscores the importance of policies aimed at reducing these factors. The association between worse self-perception of health and a higher number of cardiovascular risk factors calls attention to the importance, broadness and complexity of this subjective health marker in population surveys and suggests that self-perception of poor health is not sufficient to encourage healt…
The increase of diabetes mortality burden among Brazilian adults
Diabetes was related to almost 9% of the deaths in the South and Southeast regions of Brazil. Mortality from diabetes is increasing, especially deaths with diabetes as an associated cause. The probability of having diabetes as the underlying cause of death is greater among women and nonwhite individuals. Our results reinforce the importance of using multiple causes of death to monitor diabetes, because half the individuals with the disease will d…
Obesity and underweight among Brazilian elderly
The coexistence of obesity (body mass index, BMI > or = 30kg/m2) and underweight (BMI or = 2 hospitalizations in the previous 12 months. Both obesity and underweight were associated with increased morbidity. The association of underweight with T. cruzi infection, increased hospitalization, and low family income may reflect illness-related weight loss and social deprivation of elderly in this community. Aging in poverty may lead to an increase in …
Counseling blood donors seropositive for human T-lymphotropic virus types I and II in a developing country
Human T-lymphotropic virus types I and II (HTLV-I/II) are blood-transmitted retroviruses associated with leukemia, myelopathy, and uveitis. From 51,135 eligible blood donors at the Fundação Hemominas tested in 1993, 689 (1.35%) were repeatedly reactive to HTLV-I/II antibodies by enzyme immunoassay and were notified accordingly. Routes of transmission and preventive measures were emphasized in the orientation. Supplementary laboratory tests should…
