Representing Illiteracy
Researching vulnerable groups in social sciences is a balancing act of lifting their perspectives while protecting participants’ integrity from thoughtless methods. Newly arrived refugees with limited literacy face challenges in making their voices heard in both society and research. Yet, the methodological and ethical difficulties of meeting such challenges may also deter researchers from studying these groups, resulting in their exclusion from …
Managing Refugees’ Housing Risks Through Responsibilisation Practices
This article examines the concepts of “housing risk” and “responsibilisation,” and their impact on housing inclusion for refugees in a northern Swedish municipality. The interviews reveal that local policies often fail to recognize the welfare state’s responsibility to ensure housing for refugees, instead shifting this burden to social workers, individuals, and informal networks. Social workers face ethical dilemmas in balancing their roles as de…
Ruptures and acts of citizenship in the Swedish berry-picking industry
The Swedish berry industry relies today on two categories of agricultural seasonal workers: ‘third country nationals’, commonly from South-East Asia, who are granted seasonal work permits for berry picking; and another category designated as ‘free pickers’, mostly EU citizens who sell the harvested berries directly to Swedish berry buyers. With regard to both categories of berry-pickers, successive scandals have plagued the industry. Workers who …
Kids' in between? Views on work, gender, and family arrangements among men and women of migrant descent in Sweden
This study used qualitative interviews to explore perceptions of labour market participation in relation to gender norms and parenting ideals among employed Swedish men and women of migrant descent. Using an abductive thematic approach, we demonstrate how the respondents viewed labour market participation from different perspectives. The females saw it as a source of emancipation, whereas the men primarily viewed it as a means of providing for a …
Problematising refugee migrants in the Swedish forestry sector
In this article, ideas behind current Swedish efforts to integrate refugees in ‘green’ industries are analysed. We ask why the employment of refugees in forestry, a sector historically and globally notorious for its abuse of migrant workers, has come to be regarded as a solution in official Swedish migration policy. A discourse analytical approach is applied, analysing what the arguments are for introducing refugees to forestry work and how the f…
What Works? Family Influences on Occupational Aspirations among Descendants of Middle Eastern Immigrants on the Swedish Labour Market
In this article, we examine family influences on occupational aspirations among employed descendants of Middle Eastern immigrants. Using a qualitative approach, we conducted 21 semi-structured interviews with native-born descendants of Middle Eastern immigrants. We present and analyse their interpretations of their parents’ experiences and living conditions before, during and after migration and demonstrate how these interpretations shaped their …
Swedish experience of sheltered housing and conflicting theories in use with special regards to honour related violence (HRV)
One aspect of violence against women and children is what is referred to as honour related violence. Honour related violence (HRV) is a form of violence which is now on the agenda in several countries as a violation of human rights. From 2002 the Swedish government started paying serious attention to this issue. The aim of this paper is to present the Swedish government programme dealing with HRV with special focus on sheltered housing as the pre…
The Linnea Project
Purpose: To find out Linnea's (a typical elderly citizen) main problem in her contacts with caregivers and to improve the network between actors around Linnea so that she can feel safe and confident
