    Open Access•Witold Mucha, Anna Soßdorf et al.•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Politikwissenschaft•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 22

• The fairy tales of early warning research

    Witold Mucha•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Central…•2017•References: 27

Policy-makers and academics keep failing to anticipate social upheavals and their manifold consequences. This holds true for the Arab Spring in 2011, as it does for missing popular protests that made Ukrainian President Yanukovych leave the country in 2014. While Western governments were heavily criticized for missing these dynamics, scholars were mostly spared. This paper argues that social scientists have not learnt the lessons. The rise of lar…

  • Securitisation and militias during civil war in Peru

    Witold Mucha•ARTICLE•Conflict Security and Development•2016•References: 61

The article analyses the effects of the rhetoric and politics of security on everyday lives in indigenous communities during civil war in Peru, 1980–1995. The article draws attention to the rise of accidental killings, intra- and inter-communal rivalry and violence, and the long-term disruption of traditional mechanisms of conflict resolution as direct effects of the operationalisation of threat as the basis for recruitment of rondas campesinas, …

  • The Next ‘Spring’ is Certain to Come – and Certain to be Missed

    Witold Mucha•ARTICLE•Global Responsibility to Protect•2014•Cited by: 1

The Arab Spring took policymakers and academics by surprise. The starting point, the scope, nor the impact had been seen coming. This was primarily because of academics’ irrevocable belief in the stabilising power of authoritarian regimes. In light of this failing, the article will critically discuss the production of crisis knowledge on the basis of four major early warning tools. These are World Bank’s greed/grievance model, the predictive mode…

  • Does counterinsurgency fuel civil war? Peru and Syria compared

    Witold Mucha•ARTICLE•Critical Studies on Terrorism•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 53

This article analyses the conflict-fuelling effects of counterinsurgency on civil war in Peru (1980–1995) and Syria (2011–2012). Despite different escalation onsets, in both cases the state's response to the increasingly armed opposition intensified and protracted the conflict. The comparative analysis reveals five interdependent factors that were particularly influential in that regard: the state's denial of demands by certain segments of societ…
