  • Happy voluntary solitude? Notes on a Nordic theme

    Peter Stadius•ARTICLE•Nordiques•2024

  • Nordic Experiences in Pan-nationalisms: A Reappraisal and Comparison, 1840–1940

Open Access•Peter Stadius, Ruth Hemstad•BOOK•Nordic Experiences in Pan-nationali…•2023

This book seeks to reassess and shed new light on pan-nationalisms in general and on Scandinavianism/Nordism in particular, by seeing them as possible futures and as interconnected ideas and practices across and beyond Europe. An actor- and practice-oriented approach is applied at the expense of more essentialist categorisations of what pan-nationalism is, or is not, to underline both the synchronic and diachronic diversity of various pan-nationa…

  • Petsamo 1920–1940: Rhetoric of Colonialism and Finnishness

    Peter Stadius•ARTICLE•Journal of Finnish Studies•2021

In 1920, Finland obtained a corridor to the Arctic Ocean, a land area that, until then, had been part of Russia. Petsamo, as the corridor was named in Finnish, was part of Finland from 1920 to 1944. As a new territorial acquisition, Petsamo raised expectations and was projected as a potential space for national expansionist policy. To answer the question of how Petsamo was to be put in use for building a strong and vital Finland, and not to becom…

  • Core Citizens, Imagined Nation: Historical Security Practices of the Majority and Strategies of the Minorities in Finland; An Introduction to the Issue

Raluca Bianca Roman, Peter Stadius et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Finnish Studies•2021•References: 3

Historically, since the 1930s, Finland, much like the other Nordic countries, has rested upon ideas of openness and civic participation as a political project of modernity. The core principle has been that of a comprehensive welfare state-in Sweden, referred to as folkhemmet ('the People's home'), a society with social equality and solidarity between all citizens (e.g., This was initially a response to what has been called the breakthrough of mas…

  • Encyclopedia of Romantic Nationalism in Europe

Joep Leerssen, Inge Adriansen et al.•BOOK•Encyclopedia of Romantic…•2018

This encyclopedia documents the presence and impact of nationalized cultural consciousness in European nationalism. It tracks how intellectuals, historians, philologists, novelists, poets, painters, folklorists, and composers, in an intensely collaborative transnational network, articulated the national identities and aspirations that would go on to determine European history and politics, with effects that are still felt today. Edited by Joep Le…

  • Communicating the North: Media Structures and Images in the Making of the Nordic Region

Peter Stadius, Jonas Harvard•BOOK•Communicating the North•2016

What makes a magazine in South Africa promote Scandinavian unity among its immigrant readers and why does a Swedish king endorse attempts to influence pan-Scandinavian opinion through a transnational media event in Sweden, Norway and Denmark? Can portraits of exotic Lapplanders in the British press, enthusiastic accounts of the welfare state in post-war travel literature and descriptions of the liberal Nordic woman as a metaphor for a freer socie…

  • Petsamo: Bringing modernity to Finland’s Arctic Ocean shore 1920–1939

    Peter Stadius•ARTICLE•Acta Borealia•2016•References: 1

In the Peace Treaty of Tartu 1920 Finland was given a corridor to the Arctic Sea. This area of 10,000 km2 called Petsamo, was situated along the eastern side of the present Russo-Norwegian border. For many Finns Petsamo was seen as part of a Greater Finland expansionist ideology. Petsamo remained part of Finland until 1944, and during that time tourism was intensified to this new Arctic Ocean part of Finland. However, the most significant single …

  • Acceptance and Conformity: Merging Modernity with Nationalism in the Stockholm Exhibition in 1930

Open Access•Carl Marklund, Peter Stadius•ARTICLE•Culture Unbound Journal of…•2010

This article takes a closer look at how interwar supporters of modernism sought to overcome the opposition they had to face. It does so by looking at the usage of history and Swedishness at the Stockholm Exhibition in 1930 and contrasting this experience with a brief excursus on the image of progress and Americanism as presented at the A Century of Progress International Exposition, held in Chicago in 1933-1934. The backers of both these exhibiti…
