  • Resonance, Reverberation, and Rhythms

Open Access•Andrew C Herman, Andrew Herman et al.•ARTICLE•AoIR Selected Papers of Internet…•2023

This panel explores the theories, concepts, and methodologies appropriate to the exploration of the “vibratory power” of transduction where sound and other digitally mediated forms of reverberation conjure affective and corporeal bonds of resonance and solidarity. The first three papers engage in a critical interrogation of sound as epistemology and ontologies in digital networked media, with a focus on streaming internet radio. More specifically…

  • Health Communication and Inequalities in Primary Care Access during the Covid-19 Pandemic among Ethnic Minorities in the United Kingdom

Open Access•Winifred Ekezie, Akilah Maxwell et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Health Communication is critical in the context of public health and this was highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Ethnic minority groups were significantly impacted during the pandemic; however, communication and information available to them were reported to be insufficient. This study explored the health information communication amongst ethnic communities in relation to their experiences with primary health care services during the COVID…

  • Welcome to a Coronavirus production’

    Open Access•Katie Moylan•ARTICLE•International Journal of Cultural…•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 9

This article examines intertribal community-building in Indigenous-produced radio show Beyond Bows and Arrows, broadcast since 1983 in Dallas, Texas, and explores ways in which on-air Indigenous articulations function as acts of resurgence in turn reinforcing an Indigenous internationalism. In this critical exploration, I draw on Beyond Bows and Arrows ( BBAA) content broadcast between April and June 2020. I analyse components of the radio sound …

  • Coming to voice

    Open Access•Katie Moylan•ARTICLE•European Journal of Cultural…•2021•References: 6

This article argues for the pedagogical possibilities of collective community radio show production for transnational students; in particular, identifying the capacities for self-representation for students from otherwise marginalised and under-represented communities. Students are tasked in this elective module to collectively produce a community-facing show for a multilingual Leicester community radio station; in emphasising collective producti…

  • Mediating the real

    Open Access•Katie Moylan•ARTICLE•Critical Studies in Television…•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 12

This article explores how Treme (HBO 2010-2013) deploys reflexive aesthetic strategies to produce a critique of governmental and municipal corruption and negligence following Hurricane Katrina. Set and filmed in New Orleans, Treme negotiates additional complex layers given that many events referenced are real. The series reworks normative representations of New Orleans typified by an overdetermined authenticity in a reflexive interrogation of rec…

  • Accented radio

    Open Access•Katie Moylan•ARTICLE•Global Media and Communication•2018•References: 3

This article explores how UK community radio can facilitate and produce alternative articulations of identity and experience, which, in turn, negotiate and challenge normative discursive framings of race which otherwise dominate UK mainstream media. In particular, this article examines ways in which The TalkBack Show on Nottingham community station Kemet FM produces articulations of British Caribbean identity and argues that community radio’s rem…

  • Uncanny TV

    Open Access•Katie Moylan•ARTICLE•Television & New Media•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 5

This article explores how two recent television drama miniseries, Top of the Lake and Les Revenants produce moments of the uncanny. I argue that both series produce the uncanny in formal ways made possible by conditions of a televisuality characterized by narrative complexity and a pronounced aesthetic. In their first season, both series draw on recognizable conventions of the police procedural genre, but each develops a dialectical narrative str…
