Laulukilpailusta show-kilpailuksi
Kysyn, miten euroviisukappaleiden audiovisuaalinen näytteillepano on kehittynyt ohjelman historian ai…

Uses of local ethnic television
Finland Calling was a bilingual Sunday morning television program targeting Finnish Americans and airing on WLUC-TV, a local commercial station in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The show ran from 1962 to 2015, just over 50 years. This article uses it as a case study to argue that if we look beyond prime-time network programming, we can see that US television has not always promoted a homogeneous national culture; rather, it has at times been a resou…
Gay Porn, Politics and Lifestyle in 1980s Finland
Although the gay press has been seen as central to the formation of the gay movement, entertainment magazines focusing on sex and consumer lifestyle have until recently received little attention in studies on gay history. This article focuses on Mosse, the short-lived gay porn magazine published by mainstream publishing company Lehtimiehet in Finland between 1983 and 1985. In addition to nude photos and porn stories, Mosse featured articles on ga…
A Forgotten Spirit of Commercial Television? Co-Productions Between Finnish Commercial Television Company Mainos-Tv and Socialist Television
Finnish commercial television company Mainos-TV co-produced a string of documentary and entertainment programmes with television broadcasters in the USSR, Czechoslovakia, the GDR, Hungary and Poland in the 1970s and 1980s. This article asks what motivated Mainos-TV, a commercial television broadcaster in a non-socialist country, to collaborate with socialist television? Based on an analysis of published and archival sources (e.g. industry documen…
Finland, zero points
This chapter analyzes popular understandings of Finnish Eurovision failure in terms of the structures of feeling they incorporate. It focuses on negative affective responses that are common in Finnish media coverage of the contest, and offers an alternative understanding of the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) that differs from the prevalent way of approaching the competition as a piece of fun "Eurotrash". The negative affective relationship between…
Images from beyond the Eastern Border”
Recent research has criticized a tradition of seeing socialist media cultures as strictly separated from the West. While scholars have analyzed how socialist television institutions reacted to influences from Western media, there is little research on how socialist television culture traveled outside the socialist bloc. This article analyses the ways in which state socialist television culture appeared in Finland on the basis of the main Finnish …
Long live the friendship between the Soviet Union and Finland!’ Irony, nostalgia, and melodrama in Finnish historical television drama and documentary series
In critical studies on historical television programmes, the affective qualities of televisual memory have been discussed mainly in terms of nostalgia. This article argues that conceptualizing the affective modes of relating to the past in more varied ways can help us to better understand the politics of memory on television. As a case study, the article analyses Finnish Broadcasting Company Yleisradio’s historical drama and documentary series th…
Intervision song contests and Finnish television between East and West'
Europe, with Feeling
No other programme in the history of international TV in Europe can match the nearly 60-year-long unbroken tradition of the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC). Many factors have contributed to the contest's longevity: the members of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) have been committed to producing a flagship programme for their Eurovision network; the organizers have developed the contest to keep up with changes in media culture; and individual b…
Making Television Historical
This article considers the role of cultural memory in the interpretation of a long-standing television programme by analysing the development of cultural memory on the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) on Finnish television and print media from 1961 to 2005. Following a cultural historical approach to television history, the article identifies four memory discourses on the ESC: Eurovision history as a national narrative of disappointment (from the 19…
