Factors Associated With Risky Sexual Behaviour Among Out-of-School Youth in Kenya
This paper examines factors that may predispose unmarried and unemployed out-of-school youth to risky sexual behaviour. A total of 6129 male and female unmarried and unemployed out-of-school youth in the age range 15–24 years were successfully interviewed. Premarital Childbearing Among Adolescents in Lesotho
The issue of premarital childbearing has been a concern of many analysts in southern Africa. This paper looks at the situation of premarital childbearing in Lesotho in comparative context with the neighbouring countries. The total fertility rate (TFR) estimated from the 1996 population census of Lesotho for all women combined was 4.1 births, a decline from a TFR of 5.5 in the mid-1970s. Only a small proportion of births in Lesotho are born out-of…
Recent trends in Tanzanian fertility
This paper provides an assessment of the nature and magnitude of Tanzania's recent fertility decline, using robust methods for the identification of fertility trends. A decline in Tanzanian fertility began some time in the late 1970s or early 1980s. The pattern of decline exhibits similarities to patterns identified some years ago in Zimbabwe and Kenya. The decline has been especially marked in urban areas. It has been accompanied by a rapid rise…
Social and economic factors related to breast-feeding durations in Tanzania
Some social and economic factors related to breast-feeding durations in Tanzania are analysed using current status data taken from the 1991–92 Tanzanian Demographic and Health Survey. Proportional hazards and proportional odds models are estimated. The results show that breast-feeding durations vary according to the region of residence of the mother and child (and whether they are living in a rural or an urban area), the age of the mother at the …
The determinants of infant and child mortality in Tanzania
This paper investigates the determinants of infant and child mortality in Tanzania using the 1991/92 Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey. A hazards model is used to assess the relative effect of the variables hypothesized to influence under-five mortality. Short birth intervals, teenage pregnancies and previous child deaths are associated with increased risk of death. The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania should therefore maintain …
Fertility decline in Tanzania
According to the 1991/92 Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey, a Tanzanian woman has, on average, 6·1 births before she reaches age 50, a decline of about one birth per woman since the early 1980s. The major proximate determinant of fertility is universal and prolonged breastfeeding. An analysis of the social and demographic correlates of fertility shows that infant and child mortality, level of education and age at first marriage are among the…
