Homeless Clients' Circulation in Emergency Care: Rethinking Poverty Governance as Urban Impasse
Studies concerned with how local states govern the urban poor have long focused on the state's attempts to control, criminalise and exclude individuals from public spaces. Researchers recently shifted this focus; they increasingly engage with organisations and front‐line practices relating to care. Underlying these analyses is the question of how urban governance rubs off on front‐line work and conditions for the urban poor. In their research, sc…
Talking while walking but not with the locals: Social support and domesticity in public space before and during Covid-19 in Berlin, Germany
How has the COVID-19 pandemic changed the spatiality of social support? Did people turn to local ties when they were requested to stay at home, and what impact has this had on the public life of neighborhoods? This paper explores these questions using survey data collected in four neighborhoods in Berlin, Germany, in 2019 and 2020. We show that people received more support in their neighborhoods—but not necessarily from their neighbors. They left…
Migrant-serving organizations and urban citizenship-making in times of crisis: Copenhagen, Berlin and Tel Aviv compared
The role of civil society actors in urban citizenship had been recently examined by scholars. This article provides an investigation of how such actors interfaced with the local state during the pandemic to facilitate migrants’ urban citizenship, namely their place-based rights and resources. It focuses on migrant-serving organizations (MSOs), which are understood as key agents of migrant urban citizenship-making. Drawing on empirical research in…
Roots and routes in neighbourhoods. Length of residence, belonging and public familiarity in Berlin, Germany
Urban scholars commonly expect that residents show more neighbourhood belonging, the longer they live in an area. An imagery of fixed settlements thus remains dominant in a rapidly changing world. Recent research challenged classic assumptions but the alternative of elective belonging hardly differentiated between symbolic and practical neighbourhood use. As belonging is performatively maintained, this differentiation may be needed. What defines …
The sweet peace of perfect assurance: On well-being in the hymns texts of Fanny Crosby
Well-being is often described as a state of happiness or satisfaction with life, but it is so much more. The influence of religious involvement on a positive sense of well-being of the individual has been well documented. One aspect of religious involvement comprises the singing of hymns. Through the texts and the power of music, the well-being of the singer/believer can be positively influenced. Fanny Crosby (1820- 1915) wrote more than 8 000 hy…
Die stand van psalmsang in die NG Kerk
The status of psalm singing in the Dutch Reformed ChurchOver the past three decades, there have been consistent and increasing signs that psalms are disappearing from the repertoire of hymns that are sung in the Dutch Reformed (DR) Church. In an attempt to turn this tendency around, research was undertaken to determine the seriousness and the cause of the current situation. An empirical study was done to determine the frequency of use and the fun…
