Revealed comparative advantages in academic publishing of “old” and “new” European Union Member States 1998–2018
Bilateral trade flows and comparative advantage
The paper applies a variant of the gravity model to test whether there is a positive link between the size of trade flows and the extent to which they follow the pattern of comparative advantage. Using UNCTAD's 2016 trade data for every country in the world, and 255 merchandise items, we show that countries trading more with each other tend to follow the patterns of comparative advantages more than countries with smaller mutual trade flows. While…
Trade in Central and Eastern European countries ten years after their EU accession — Is there convergence
The paper focuses on the effects of EU’s Eastern Enlargement of 2004 on trade convergence within the EU and among the new member states from Central and Eastern Europe (CEE-8). Using sigma-convergence approach, it finds evidence of convergence of exports and imports per capita as well as of productivity levels associated with the member states’ export baskets. Convergence of territorial and commodity structures of trade has not occurred; converse…
Gravity Model of Trade of the Czech and Slovak Republics 1995-2012
The paper uses Heckman correction to estimate gravity models of trade of the Czech and Slovak Republics for the period 1995-2012. Additionally, separate gravity models are estimated for 4-year panels of the period using Tobit method. The research shows that importance of common border for the countries' bilateral trade with third countries has been gradually declining. This is in line with accelerating globalization and lower shipping prices. On …
North Atlantic Civil Aviation
In 2007, the European Commission and US government signed an agreement liberalizing international air transportation between the two continents. It was expected to increase the annual number of passengers by up to 11 million and generate more than 5 billion EUR in consumer surplus. However, in 2008 the market was struck by global economic crisis. We use regression analysis to distinguish between positive impacts of liberalization and negative imp…
David Ricardo, Robert Torrens and the Origins of the Principle of Comparative Advantage
The authorship of the principle of comparative advantage is generally credited to David Ricardo. Recent papers published in scientific journals have cast doubt on this axiom and have debated roles of Robert Torrens, James Mill and John Stuart Mill in its history. We show many of the arguments used in this debate are unscientific and unverifiable. After conducting an analysis of the history of development of the principle we define the difference …
