Breaking ground
Considering evolving economic and social conditions, there is an increasing need for entrepreneurial concepts that align with changing demands. While subsistence entrepreneurship has been recognized for its potential to alleviate poverty in developing countries, this paper proposes a theoretical framework that integrates existing ideas and incorporates sustainable development objectives from a personalist viewpoint. This novel theoretical groundi…
Women and men in tech
The persistent gender wage gap remains a pressing issue with far-reaching societal implications. Despite policy interventions aimed at closing this gap, the psychological and behavioral factors shaping wage expectations have received less attention. Drawing on the theory of statistical discrimination and signaling perspective, this study shifts the focus from employer-side discrimination to the self-perception of jobseekers, examining how gender-…
Beyond borders
Collaborative research papers are widely acknowledged to be more impactful than single‐authored studies in higher education amidst subject area known to alter citation counts. While preceding studies have mostly recognised these two as the antecedents of research impact separately, it needs to be clarified whether the interaction of research area and type of collaboration causes any moderation. Comprehensive knowledge of differences in impact cau…
Perceived worth of human capital across IT jobseekers in the digital era
In an era of technological transformation in labor markets, jobseekers navigate a new landscape of wage uncertainty during the hiring process. Not disclosing wage expectations typically leads to subsequent wage bargaining, which can impact the job matching process and the final agreed-upon wage. This study delves into when jobseekers are more inclined to disclose wage expectations in their online CVs, considering the interplay of human capital ac…
Human capital and border effect
This study investigates the dynamics of human capital in borderlands, focusing on the case of the Minho River border between Spain and Portugal. We examine how this capital influences company sales in these culturally and economically intertwined regions. The problem is critical due to the unique nature of borderlands in global trade and cultural exchange. Our novel approach uses hierarchical linear models for comparative analysis between municip…
Beyond the pitch
The paper explores the potential influence of subjective factors on salary determination, particularly examining the impact of physical appearance on the earnings of soccer players. This study encompasses data from 373 Major League Soccer players over 12 seasons (2007-2018). Facial symmetry, quantified using the coordinates of each player’s facial features, is utilized as an indicator of physical attractiveness. Various analytical models, includi…
The Efficiency of the Performing Arts
This article addresses the problem of efficiency measurement in the performing arts by investigating the highly heterogeneous Russian theater market. We adopt data envelopment analysis and explore efficiency drivers, focusing on two groups of public theaters, classical academic and leading regional theaters. The scope of programming, observed through touring and new productions, is shown to have a negative impact on efficiency. The implications h…
Research‐teaching nexus
The study tests 3 research hypotheses on the teaching‐research nexus using the administrative data of the HSE University in Russia for 7 years. We confirmed the hypothesis that a lower classroom teaching load is associated with higher research output. Undergraduate courses have a relatively higher negative effect, especially on the probability of producing research output at all. A higher concentration of teaching in some semesters or quarters lo…
Is there value in international accreditation beyond quality? An empirical analysis of the AACSB accredited schools
The paper investigates the value of AACSB accreditation for business schools. The status of an accredited school decreases the asymmetry of information and the study aims to fill the gap if this market signal has a value beyond enhancing the quality itself. It is based on the international panel data of the AACSB Business Schools Questionnaire and shows that, on average, business schools demonstrate a higher economic performance after the accredi…
Testing the contestable market theory in eSports
This article contributes to the development of contestable market theory by investigating how competitiveness in the eSports industry influences the size of this industry, as measured by the volume of monetary prizes. We use data on each gamer's prize earnings for each tournament from 1999 to 2015 to estimate panel vector autoregression (V.A.R.) model with fixed effects. The main finding is that competition does not increase industry size. This r…
