It's very much how you define dangerous”: The cultural construction of mothers' beliefs about risk in Denmark and the United States
Where are we, and where should we go? An introduction to Davis et al., “Sixty years of studying the sacred: Auditing and advancing the psychology of religion and spirituality”
A Death in the Family: Links between Religion, Parenting, and Family Communication about Death
The present study assessed the frequency and nature of parent-child communication about death and identified predictors of such communication. The sample comprised 24 families who had recently lost a family member. Parents completed survey measures of global parenting dimensions (warmth/acceptance, psychological control, behavioral control), parental coping (religious and secular coping), parental religiosity, and parent-child communication about…

The Role of Parental Psychological Control and Warmth in College Students’ Relational Aggression and Friendship Quality
This study investigated the role of perceived parental psychological control and warmth in college students’ friendship quality and use of relational aggression with peers. College students ( N = 237) completed self-report measures assessing their relational aggression, friendship quality, and parents’ perceived use of psychological control and warmth. As predicted, college students’ relational aggression partially mediated the relation between p…
Exploring emerging adults’ relational spirituality: A longitudinal, mixed-methods analysis
Using a longitudinal, mixed-methods design and building on Shults and Sandage’s (2006) relational spirituality model, we explored spiritual seeking, spiritual dwelling, and the dialectical process of balancing spiritual seeking and dwelling. Assessing a sample of 77 Christian emerging adults twice over a 2-year period (thirty-nine 2006 graduates and thirty-eight 2008 graduates), we quantitatively measured spiritual seeking (using the Quest Scale)…

How shall we fulfill the vision of a multilevel multi-method psychology of religion
The Complexity of Quest in Emerging Adults' Religiosity, Well-Being, and Identity
The construct of quest as measured by the Quest Scale raises complexities that this study addressed with online surveys measuring religiosity, ego identity, and well-being of graduates from two Christian colleges. Intrinsic questers (those above the scale midpoint in intrinsic and quest scores but below the extrinsic midpoint) made up over half of those high in intrinsic religiosity and did not differ in Christian orthodoxy, religious identity, r…
Parent-child dynamics and emerging adult religiosity: Attachment, parental beliefs, and faith support
Parental religiosity has been shown to predict child and adolescent religiosity, but the role of parents in emerging adult religiosity is largely unknown. We explored associations among emerging adult religiosity, perceived parental religiosity, perceived similarity to mother's and father's religious beliefs, parental faith support, and parental attachment. Participants were 481 alumni of two Christian colleges and completed surveys online. Emerg…
Attachment to God: A Qualitative Exploration of Emerging Adults' Spiritual Relationship with God
This study assessed emerging adults' attachment relationships with parents, peers, and God to explore the sufficiency of the correspondence and compensation models of attachment. We analyzed narratives of 119 (60 male) Christian college graduates describing their relational experiences with God. Narratives were coded for five relational patterns in attachment relationships (Granqvist & Kirkpatrick, 2008). Participants also completed the IPPA scal…
Religiosity, Sense of Meaning, and Health Behavior in Older Adults
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between older adults' religiosity, sense of meaning in life, and health behavior. Three dimensions of religiosity were assessed: religious orientation (intrinsic and extrinsic), sanctification of the body, and relationship with God. Five health behaviors were measured: smoking, exercise, taking responsibility for one's own health, nutritious eating, and stress management. In general, stron…
Experimental Evidence that Theistic-Religious Body Affirmations Improve Women's Body Image
We examined in a random-assignment, pretest-posttest design whether college women's body image would improve after reading religious and spiritual affirmations about their bodies. The sample was predominantly white and Christian. In a pretest, women completed measures of religiosity and body esteem (how they felt about their weight and appearance) and were then assigned via matched random assignment to three different groups for a treatment and p…
Research: Quest Orientation in Young Women: Age Trends During Emerging Adulthood and Relations to Body Image and Disordered Eating
The college and early adulthood years-the period of emerging adulthood-entail dramatic changes in identity and faith, but little is known about age trends in Quest orientation across these years. Further, nothing is known about the links between Quest and body image and eating behavior. We addressed these issues in 3 groups of young women: college freshmen and sophomores (n = 57,Mage 18.5 years), college juniors and seniors (n = 43, M age 21 year…

Exploring Adolescent Spiritual and Religious Development: Current and Future Theoretical and Empirical Perspectives
Parent-Child Communication about Religion: Survey and Diary Data on Unilateral Transmission and Bi-Directional Reciprocity Styles
A Critique of Models of Religious Experience
The Edwards and Lowis (this issue) critique and revision of the Batson, Schoenrade, and Ventis (1993) model of religious experience is critiqued on the following major grounds: (a) It fails to circumscribe the topic adequately and relies on extreme cases and exceptional figures (e.g., Moses, Siddhartha) to illustrate religious experience while failing to consider seriously the appropriateness and effect of using such extreme examplars; (b) it fai…
The artistic evolution of mommy: A longitudinal case study of symbolic and social processes
A longitudinal case study illustrates how artistic development can be understood as the interplay between the child's developing symbolic skills and the contextual social support for the child's artistic expression
A naturalistic observation of children drawing: Peer collaboration processes and influences in children's art
There are striking gender differences in boyS' and girlS' artistic styles. A naturalistic observation of children drawing sheds light on the sociocognitive and collaborative processes through which peers influence each other's art
Effects of Game Type on Children's Gender-Based Peer Preferences: A Naturalistic Observational Study
Gender Differences in Preschoolers' and Kindergartners' Artistic Production and Preference
