Resilience and adaptation: Galician canning fish industry evolution
Galicia, the leading region in Europe in the manufacture of canned fish. The governance of the sector is characterized by two main actors, the regional government of Galicia and the National Association of Fish and Seafood Cannery Manufacturers, and the multiannual strategic plans of the sector. During the period of validity of only two existing strategic plans, economic crisis affected the region severely. However, the canning sector maintained,…
Assessing the economic effects of the European landing obligation on the Spanish fishery in the Celtic Sea
European Union has agreed to implement the landing obligation for all species subject to quota in order to ensure long term harvest in a healthy marine environment, implying a prohibition on discarding species subject to quota that can legally be caught and landed under Community fisheries legislation. Landing obligation has been progressively implemented since 2014 and entered fully into force in January 2019. This work analyses the potential ec…
Sustainability, investment strategy, and governance: Evaluation of wind energy sector in North-West Spain
Climate change is one of the greatest challenges humanity faces globally. For this reason, governmental efforts to reduce emissions of polluting gases have multiplied in the last decade. Against this panorama, petroleum companies have adopted a strategic policy focused on energy diversification, intending to contribute to sustainable development. In the case of Spain, wind energy has been one of the renewable energies that have attracted the most…

Multilevel governance, PV solar energy, and entrepreneurship: The generation of green hydrogen as a fuel of renewable origin
In Spain, the institutional framework for photovoltaic energy production has experienced distinct stages. From 2007 to 2012, the feed-in-tariff system led to high annual growth rates of this renewable energy, but after the suppression of the policy of public subsidies, the sector stagnated. In recent years, green hydrogen, an innocuous gas in the atmosphere, has become a driving force that stimulates photovoltaic energy production. Since 2020, en…
Gay Politics Goes Mainstream: Democrats, Republicans and Same‐sex Relationships
Attitudes towards same‐sex relationships in the USA have changed radically over a relatively short period of time. After remaining fairly constant for over two decades, opinions became more favourable starting in 1992—a presidential election year in which the Democratic and Republican Parties took opposing stands over the status of gay people in society. What roles did political parties and their leaders play in this process of cultural change? U…

Divorce Risk, Wages, and Working Wives: A Quantitative Life-Cycle Analysis of Female Labor Force Participation
This paper develops a quantitative life-cycle model to study the increase in married women's labor force participation (LFP). We calibrate the model to match key life-cycle statistics for the 1935 cohort and use it to assess the changed environment faced by the 1955 cohort. We find that a higher divorce probability and changes in wage structure are each able to explain a large proportion of the LFP increase. Higher divorce risk increases LFP not …

Cultural Change as Learning: The Evolution of Female Labor Force Participation over a Century
This paper develops a learning model of cultural change to investigate why women's labor force participation (LFP) and attitudes toward women's work both changed dramatically. In the model, women's beliefs about the long-run payoff from working evolve endogenously via an intergenerational learning process. This process generically generates the data's S-shaped LFP curve and introduces a novel role for wage changes via their effect on the speed of…
China’s Missing Girls in the Three Decades from 1980 to 2010
Sex Ratios and Crime:Evidence from China's One-Child Policy * Sex ratios (males to females) rose markedly in China in the last two decades, and crime rates nearly doubled. This paper examines whether the two are causally linked.High sex ratios imply fewer married men, and marriage has been conjectured to be a socializing force. Our paper exploits the quasi-natural experiment generated by the Chinese one-child policy, a policy which is widely held t…
Does Culture Matter?
Culture: An Empirical Investigation of Beliefs, Work, and Fertility
We study culture by examining the work and fertility behavior of second-generation American women. Culture is proxied with past female labor force participation and total fertility rates from the woman's country of ancestry. The values of these variables capture not only economic and institutional conditions but also the country's preferences and beliefs regarding women's roles. Since the women live in the United States, only the belief and prefe…
Women, Work, and Culture
This paper discusses some recent advances in the area of culture and economics and examines the effect of culture on a key economic outcome: female labor supply. To separate the effect of market variables and institutions from culture, I use an epidemiological approach, studying second-generation American women. I use both female LFP and attitudes in the women's country of ancestry as cultural proxies and show that both cultural proxies have quan…
Fertility: The Role of Culture and Family Experience
This paper attempts to disentangle the direct effects of experience from those of culture in determining fertility. We use the GSS to examine the fertility of women born in the US but from different ethnic backgrounds. We take lagged values of the total fertility rate in the woman's country of ancestry as the cultural proxy and use the woman's number of siblings to capture her direct family experience. We find that both variables are significant …
Equity and Resources: An Analysis of Education Finance Systems
We analyze five education finance systems: local, state, foundation, power equalizing with recapture (PER), and power equalizing without recapture (PEN). In a calibrated model, we find that finance systems have large effects on educational resources and equity. The trade-off between equity and resources, however, is not monotone. Ranking systems by expected utility, we find that PER consistently ranks highest, though it provides fewer resources t…
Education finance reform: A dynamic perspective
We use a dynamic Tiebout model to analyze the consequences of moving from a pure local system of education finance to a pure state system of finance in which each student receives the same resources. While much of the education finance literature focuses on the static or immediate effects of such a change, our analysis also examines the dynamic effects. Numerical simulations for a calibrated version of our model indicate that these dynamic effect…
The scope for collusive behavior among debtor countries
We study the question of whether there exist strategies whereby countries are able to sustain a cartel or collusive behavior when bargaining with a bank over the amount of debt to be repaid. We show that despite the existence of economies to scale in bargaining--if commitment were possible the countries would benefit from joint bargaining--a debtors' cartel will not emerge in equilibrium (in the absence of credible commitment mechanisms). A uniqu…
