Workplace incivility as a risk factor for workplace bullying and psychological well-being: A longitudinal study of targets and bystanders in a sample of swedish engineers
The findings of the present study suggests that workplace incivility can be a risk factor for future bullying. In addition, the findings suggest that experienced workplace incivility exerts a unique negative effect on psychological well-being, even when accounting for exposure to workplace bullying
Deserving and Undeserving Welfare States: Cash Transfers and Hegemonic Struggles in South Africa
The South African social grant programme appeared as if it might suddenly end on 1 April 2017. The potential termination of grants kicked off a significant public outcry by members of parliament, the judiciary, the treasury, the press and civil society organisations. At the time, popular explanations of this crisis contended that grants were about to stop because of corruption and state capture. Instead I argue that the 2017 grant crisis extended…
Sophia's choice: Debt, social welfare, and racial finance capitalism
In this article, I examine normative assumptions about cash transfers as public goods and the lived experience of cash transfers as private debts. Difficult Questions and Ambivalent Answers on Genetic Testing
A qualitative pilot study on the attitudes of some citizens in southern Sweden toward predictive genetic testing - and a quantitative nation wide opinion poll targeting the same issues, was initiated by the Cultural Scientific Research Team of BAGADILICO. The latter is an international biomedical research environment on neurological disease at Lund University. The data of the two studies crystallized through analysis into themes around which the …
The Individual in the Changing Working Life
Working life has been the subject of great change in recent years with contemporary conditions generally providing increased opportunities and autonomy for individuals. But these benefits can coincide with greater demands and responsibilities, increasing the pressure to work outside of traditional working hours and so creating conflict between work and family life. This book contributes towards our understanding of contemporary working life, cons…
Collective and Individualistic Coping with Stress at Work
In the present study, coping was viewed as both an individualistic and a collective phenomenon, and the investigation assessed how use of collective and individualistic coping strategies was related to sex of respondent and organizational level. These strategies were measured by responses to Swedish versions of the Strategic Approach to Coping Scale and the COPE Inventory. Data were collected by means of an Internet-based questionnaire completed …
Coping Strategies and Health Symptoms among Women and Men in a Downsizing Organisation
This study examined how women and men cope with stress during a period of organizational change and how the coping strategies are related to health. Questionnaire responses were obtained from 98 female and male administrators of health care service working in a Swedish governmental County Council during a period of downsizing. In line with earlier studies, the results showed women to be more likely than men to endorse the emotion-focused strategi…
