The Nexus between Economic Freedom and Islamic Bank Performance
The present study provides new empirical evidence on the impact of economic freedom on Islamic banks’ performance. The empirical analysis focuses on Islamic banks operating in the MENA banking sectors during the period 2000–2008. We find that the larger, more diversified, and better capitalized Islamic banks tend to be relatively more profitable, while credit risk and expense preference behavior seem to exert negative impact. The findings suggest…
The impact of forced mergers and acquisitions on banks’ total factor productivity
In the present paper, we employ alternative techniques to examine the impact of mergers and acquisitions on the total factor productivity of Malaysian banks. These alternative techniques extend from the use of non-parametric ‘frontier’-oriented Malmquist productivity index (MPI) and central tendency ordinary least square (OLS) and fixed effects (FE) panel regression methods. We find that Malaysian banks have exhibited a higher mean total factor p…
Developments in the efficiency of the Malaysian banking sector
In the mid-1990s, East Asian countries have experienced severe financial crisis that were followed by deep economic downturns. A variety of methodologies have been used to explain the Asian financial crisis. However, the impact of the Asian financial crisis of 1997 on the efficiency of the banking sector has not been studied yet. The present article attempts to provide new empirical evidence on the efficiency of the Malaysian banking sector aroun…
Determinants of bank profitability in developing economies
This study seeks to examine the performance of 77 Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan, and Pakistani commercial banks between 1997 and 2008. The empirical findings suggest that bank specific characteristics – in particular, liquidity, non-interest income, credit risk, and capitalization – have positive and significant impacts on bank performance, while cost is negatively related to bank profitability. As for the impact of macroeconomic indicators, the result…
Has economic freedom fostered bank performance? Panel evidence from China
The impact of economic freedom on the well-being of the economy has been widely documented. Noticeably absent from the literature is empirical evidence on the impact of economic freedom on the banking sector. This article employs data on the Chinese banking sector and provides for the first time empirical evidence on the impact of economic freedom. We find evidence supporting far greater freedom for entrepreneurs to start businesses. The empirica…
