Mainstreaming Sustainability
We introduce this Special Issue on Mainstreaming Sustainability by reviewing insights from organisational research on how sustainability becomes, or fails to become, mainstream practice. Although organisational sustainability research has investigated diverse approaches to addressing sustainability challenges, critical questions about mainstreaming remain underexplored. To advance this field of research, we define sustainability mainstreaming and…
Attitudes of millennials toward corporate responsibility
Purpose We examined the attitudes of millennial-aged business students toward economic, social and environmental corporate responsibility (CR). Currently, these individuals are of an age that they have entered the workforce and are now ascending or have ascended into roles of leadership in which they have decision-making power that influences their company’s CR agenda and implementation. Thus, following the ecological systems perspective, we test…
The stimulus of European Union accession on the personal values formation process
The main purpose of this study is to investigate the change in the personal values orientations of individuals in Croatia and Slovenia resulting from the countries’ accession to the European Union (EU). We examined business managers’ and professionals’ value orientation by using four individual-level higher-order dimensions of self-transcendence, self-enhancement, openness to change and conservation, as defined in Schwartz’s value theory. To capt…
A cross-cultural exploratory analysis of pandemic growth
Generation Cohorts and Personal Values
This study investigated the generation cohort value orientations of 774 Chinese and 784 U.S. managers and professionals. The three Chinese generations (Consolidation, Cultural Revolution, Social Reform) since the establishment of Communist China were significantly more open to change and self-enhancement but less conservative and self-transcendent than the Republican Era generation. The value orientations of U.S. generations (Generation X, Baby B…
Spiritual Connections with the Natural Environment
Nature-centred spiritual traditions, Asian religions and philosophies, and monotheist religions have many lessons concerning relationships between humankind and nature. How these lessons have been translated into environmental action as well as informed contemporary eco-philosophies and have been adopted by environmentalist organizations is addressed. And finally, the potential for global change in ecological consciousness and action is discussed
War and peace on the land
Alternative technologies such as organic farming often serve as focal points for socio-political contests between groups which hold different sets of interests, values and beliefs. The symbolic construction of meanings plays an important part in influencing and controlling organizational and individual frames of perspectives and actions to either enhance or suppress the potential for radical change to the status quo. A content analysis of concept…
How pay equity legislation came to Ontario
This paper presents a detailed case analysis of the emergence of far‐reaching pay equity legislation (Bill 154) in Ontario in 1987 in order to test a general analytical framework designed to explain major changes in public policy. Three factors are postulated to be instrumental in the attainment of new legislative initiatives: changes in environmental variables (e.g., economic and demographic variables, historical trends and precedents); shifts i…
