  • Contemporary Turkey: An Islamic-capitalist variety of modernity

    Open Access•Ibrahim Kaya•ARTICLE•Social Science Information•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 8

This article offers a new conceptualization of the multiple modernities debate by analyzing the relationship of Islamic conservatism to modernity. I argue that in post-1980 Turkey 'modernity' was re-interpreted, giving ever more emphasis to capitalism and to the Islamic societal self-understanding at the expense of commitment to autonomy, to critique and self-questioning, to gender equality, and so on. I pose the question whether this is still an…

  • Conceptualizing the current clashes between modernist republicans and Islamic conservatives in Turkey

    Open Access•Ibrahim Kaya•ARTICLE•Social Science Information•2012•Cited by: 4•References: 9

Resume This article aims to foster a deeper understanding of the current clashes between modernist republicans and Islamic conservatives in Turkey. Through an examination of the relation of conservatism to modernity, I argue that there exists a conservative goal of 'overcoming modernity', though in a paradoxical form, which is crucial for our comprehension of this conflict. Central here is the Islamic conservative resistance to the 'cultural prog…

  • Identity Politics: The Struggle for Recognition or Hegemony

    Open Access•Ibrahim Kaya•ARTICLE•East European Politics and…•2007•Cited by: 3•References: 2

This article aims to answer the question whether identity-based movements are free from economic interests. By analyzing the actions and orientations of the Islamists in Turkey, I show that new social movements based on cultural identities are far from representing the demands of groups for recognition. Rather, these movements aim at establishing hegemony by controlling the intellectual life of society by cultural means. It is insisted that we ne…

  • Social Theory and Later Modernities: The Turkish Experience

    Open Access•Ibrahim Kaya•BOOK•Social Theory and Later Modernities•2004

The debate on varieties of modernity is central to current social theory and research, and this book explores the theme in relation to the culture and society of Turkey. It focuses on the Kemalist project to create a modern Turkish nation-state, analysing its historical background, the role of the concepts of ethnicity and nation, and the configurations of state, society and economy in the new Turkish republic. The author then moves on to examine…

  • Modernity, Openness, Interpretation: A Perspective on Multiple Modernities

    Open Access•Ibrahim Kaya•ARTICLE•Social Science Information•2004•Cited by: 11•References: 5

This article aims to inspire an analysis of modernity that would provide a starting point for conceptualizing multiple modernities. First, I argue that conceptualizing modernity as an open-ended horizon engenders spaces to interpret modernity in multiple ways. A view of modernity is thus developed that questions totalizing and Eurocentric theories of modernity. Then the current state of the plurality and diversity of identities and practices is e…

  • Modernity and Veiled Women

    Open Access•Ibrahim Kaya•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social Theory•2000•Cited by: 1

This article aims to explore the relationship between veiled, Islamist, women and modernity in Turkey where the woman question is indeed exemplary of the tension-ridden relations between modernity and Islam. By examining the veiled women's rejection of modernity I argue that it is wrong to read Islamism as an actual questioning of modernity. Traditional Islam is not the key element in understanding the veiled women's identity; rather, at the core…
