The Army's Last Segregated Unit
Only the Civil War saw more Black soldiers held prisoner than the Korean Conflict, yet the story of these soldiers has generally been overlooked by both scholars of that war and those of African American military history. Despite President Truman’s 1948 executive order desegregating the armed forces, when hostilities broke out in Korea in 1950, the US Army remained rigidly segregated. As a result, a number of all-Black units were at the front lin…

The author notes significant differences between the treatment of the women in the two colonies and in the remembrance of the comfort woman systems. In Korea, dozens of comfort women statues and memorial…

Expectancy‐Value Models for the STEM Persistence Plans of Ninth‐Grade, High‐Ability Students
Group differences in the effects of the expectancies and values that high‐ability students have for science and mathematics on plans to persist in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) were investigated. A nationally representative sample of ninth‐grade students, the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS: 2009; n = 21,444) was used. The analytic sample was 1,757 (48% female, 52% male) Black (13.8%), Hispanic (26.7%), and…

In Phase I of the study, hierarchical linear modeling was used to assess the teacher effectiveness of 307 fifth-grade teachers in terms of student learning gains. In Phase II, 32 teachers (17 top quartile and 15 bottom quartile) participated in an in-depth cross-case analysis of their instructi…
Remediation and Dismissal Policies in Counselor Education
Counselor educators today are faced with a difficult dilemma. They are mandated to dismiss students they judged to be unfit and irremediable, yet they risk legal action whenever executing a student dismissal decision. Their duty to protect the public must be weighed against the liabilities of costly litigation to institutions, programs, and themselves. This article describes 1 counselor education program's decision to dismiss a student and endure…
